Is that so? Are you a spammer testing your postability?

I wouldn't think so because you bothered to fill out your model # and carrier, but ya never know...

I have a Black Berry Pearl 8100 under a T-Mobile contract.

Now, my current OS is 4.2.1.107 for the 8100, my desktop software is 4.2.2.14

I have been searching the internet and apparently the newest (non beta) stable OS is the 4.5.0.81. In order to upgrade my OS I must also upgrade my desktop software apparently. But here comes the question.

When I go onto the T mobile site they say that the most up to date software and OS is the 4.2.1.107 / 4.2.2.14 combo. Not surprisingly, the same combo that I have. Due to the fact that I simply downloaded the software off the disk that came with the phone.

So for someone in my situation would it be smart to upgrade the software/OS? Obviously using another carriers software. Iv heard of some problems ( in previous upgrades) in which the camera no longer worked can someone elaborate?

- Alex (Relaxed Panda)

PS- I'm pritty happy with the current combo I have, all I wish to really do is watch you tube videos, which I hear 4.5 is needed in order to do.

oh no, I tried to type out the next poste as quick as possible before someone replied. I just made the account and it said that I wouldn't be able to poste until I clicked on some hyperlink in the email. With needless to say I havent received any email probably due to yahoo's lack of dependency but what ever. Anyways I wanted to test out the thread before i took my time to type out the question.

* also is you would so please, define "postability", im just curious as to its connotation

You should be able to use Desktop Manager 4.2 SP2 to upgrade to OS 4.5 . T-mobile says that what you have is the latest, because they haven't released it yet, but ANY carriers 8100 OS will work on your BB, just follow the directions in the sticky at the top of the forum with the latest 8100 OS in it.

As far as bugs go, they are pretty hit or miss. Some people report very different experiences with the same OS on the same model BB.

I am not sure if the camera problem has been fixed in that release, but it was making the camera pictures almost all white.

Welcome to BBF!

You can load the version below. I'm running it on 3 TMobile Pearls. You do not need to update your Desktop Manager. It will load with DM 4.2.

And if you want to upgrade your Desktop Manager, you can get that directly from the blackberry.com website.

Thanks for the welcome

I will be sure to look more into the upgrade in the coming days as I probably wont find the time until the weekend to fulfill the task.

Are there any recognizable features, apps, or pretty much anything that are interesting to note from a 4.2 -> 4.5 jump? And should I download the OS's incrementally? Or do a full upgrade?

- Thanks, Alex (Relaxed Panda)

I would definately go straight to the newest one.

Biggest differences from 4.2>4.5 are:
Enhanced Media Player with playlist support
HTML Email
Upgraded Browser

I'm sure there is a lot more, just can't think of em off the top of my head.

Oh yea, it sill support up to an 8GB microsd card now.

Oh and I forgot to ask,

When upgrading will a format of the phone memory be necessary? If so would the sd also need to be formatted in order to synchronize correctly with the new OS?

The upgrade process takes care of everything. It makes a backup, erases the old OS, loads the new OS, and then restores the backup. There are some issues with media cards formated in 4.2 causing resets when used in OS 4.5. I suggest reformatting the card after upgrading to 4.5.

The upgrade process will wipe everything off of the phone, but it also creates a backup first, and it will not wipe you media card.

Thanks for the updage JC, I know it says "8GB+" but its almost impossible to find anything bigger than 8 right now.

On a different note, I know its the wrong section to ask but I believe I will get a better response here.

Is there anyway (aside from subscribing to a thread), to see all the threads that I have posted on?

No Issues doing the upgrade in most cases, the only draw back is if you need to contact someone in support they will often refuse to support you with a device running anything other than that which they provide, which is fair enough :D

One more difference. The app Documents to go will help you with office. It might be nicer than E-office
