Hi all, pretty new with my BB (8100 on Cing...love the thing). So, what is the real difference/value of keyboard lock vs. standby (when using the mute key on top)? I understand what keyboard lock is...pretty straightforward on any cell phone, but how does standby differ from that other than the obvious of hitting different keys to enable/disable?

I would say no real difference. I use the stanby mode more because it is easier to enable/disable. However, if you just wanted to check the time or to see if you had a voice mail or message without unlocking the phone then the keyboard lock would be the way to go or if you had password protection on.

I think in standby mode it puts the phone to sleep. So unless you receive a call/message it stays in sleep more. I'm sure it saves battery life but you wont be able to see the screen until you come out of standby mode..

does it prevent you from receiving email - you'll still hear the audion sound when you receive an email.........it essentially is similar to a screen lock but better in that all functions are still active.

You will save on battery life and will not accidently put in passwords when in lock mode...........great new feature

In standby you get calls (answer or ignore comes up) and notification of messages. The only way to get out of the mode is Mute, or hold red phone down 3 seconds. Keyboard lock is similar, but any keypress notifies you to press * Green phone to get out. And pressing trackball 2-3 times gives you the 911 option, and unlock option as well. You still get calls/messages.

Can either of these be set to activate automatically or do you have to manually activate it. How are both activated?

keyboard lock is also used in conjuntion with the coded security feature, whereas standby does not

Standby also disables all keys being pressed, while key lock does not like newt stated. From my experience they both work like they should. And others have answered the question too when you have security on your device only keylock will activate it. Putting your phone on standby does it no good if you have password. Anyone hitting the mute button will get the screen back.

Only real noticable difference is that after you receive a call from standby mode, you will have to press mute button again to put it back to sleep while if you were using keylock, after a call it will go right back to locking itself.

The only way to automatically set it to LOCK is to enable password security. But other than that, MUTE to standby, or press and hold * to lock. Or just set one of your sidekeys to lock.
