Default Image Compression/Content Compression?

Please Login to Remove!

Curious for an answer to this newbie questions

I have the 8700C and emailed myself a jpg. It would appear that BB auto-compresses images sent via email (even tried the option d/l all) but it reduced and image I sent myself (one file was 120k and wound up being 15k in the email)

Is this because my content compression is set to "on" - or is that just for internal data

I uploaded the same image to my server and via the browser went to the link and "save" and it wasn't compressed.

Is there an option on the bb to NOT compress incoming email content?

thanks! (I hope I explained that correctly)

Yes, you've explained it correctly, and I've wondered the same thing and cannot yet find a way around it with BIS. Not sure about BES. And I've tried various image types (and even a zipped file) and the result is always the same.

And web images don't get altered, as you say.

Are you sure? is the file size when you save to your bb the same as the original file size?

well that would all depend on what the image was. Being a graphic designer, I can assure you, if it's being compressed at that ration (as proven on my unit and some others) - it's very obvious on several images I experiment (you can see jpg compression/artifacting quite clearly)

Probably less noticible on smaller images - but if you are looking at a 320x240 image and have a lot of a solid color, you can easily tell what I'm talking about.

The BB resamples images on the server to native screen resolution. If you zoom in, you have to select "Enhance image" and the section you are viewing will be resent, zoomed and resampled. This occurs on large images viewed through the browser as well.

The Blackberry compresses email, they gave the 8700 series more memory for this purpose. Emails and attachments take up too much room if you get alot of them, most people who use their BB for business will vouch for this. I have to back up my emails and erase them off of my BB to free up space and refer to them later as needed, I use desktop manager like an external hard drive.

Not sure how to answer your question about the pictures, if you are going to save an image it is better to load the direct link of the picture into your BB browser. If you use google search for medium to larger images and save them, they make good screen savers.
