Default Memory leak

Please Login to Remove!

Maybe someone can explain this--I know that memory "leaks" have been discussed here, but I can't find the answer to this one.

I am using 4.6.0.304 on my Bold. I have a large media card and put everything I can on the media card. (Yes, I know, it doesn't take the apps themselves.)

When I upgraded to this OS about a month ago from, I think, 301, I had approx. 34 mb of free app memory on fresh boot. This lasted for a while, but then it started to go down over time, even though I haven't added new apps. Now, when I do a complete reboot, I only have about 19 mb of free app memory. This goes down quickly to 5-10 mb app mem. I do not have an inordinate number of apps on my BB.

I've tried getting rid of some older email messages (it automatically deletes them after 30 days, anyway). No real help.

How do i trouble shoot this? Please feel free to reroute me to any thread that has already discussed this issue. I found one from 2008, referring to much older Bold OS's but it didn't help.

Thanks very much.

Why not try one of the official 5.0 OS Builds. There have been rave reviews of the latest 5.0.0.464, where memory and battery performance is concerned. I for one can attest to that. I was running the .411 and was having major battery issues, but since .464 I have gained memory and battery is great now.

Give it a try.

Thanks very much. I'm reading on this forum that there are issues with 5.0 about VVM and some applications hanging up. I was going to wait for a more mature version of that OS to avoid repeated updates.

I wonder if there is anything that can be done with the OS I'm using (the official AT&T one)?

close apps running in the background, clear browser cache, clear the logs.

Call RIM and tell them to fix their life-old memory problem.

Call the developers of the apps that leak like a sieve and tell them to fix their life-old memory problems.

I've heard about clearing logs, but never really understood what logs, and how to clear. Can someone explain that?

Thanks.

It does nothing. There are logs stored by the OS on the BB.

Type <ALT> LGLG on the main screen to see them. Clearing them saves, on average, 80-100kb. That's not a meaningful amount. Not when people store large pictures and ringtnes in device memory (oops).

But people keep suggesting it like it is gospel.

I have the same issue. I clear all the above mentioned (also it's good to reset Google Maps) but evry time I do a battery pull my memory is always a bit less than last time. Even though I've added nothing, my free ram mem is now 1G less than last week. Wtf??? Any other ideas??

I'm still following this thread I started. I've managed to recover about 7 mb of memory doing all the things suggested, including the reset of Google Maps, eliminating one program I didn't use, clearing caches, clearing logs, removing emails, removing some ringtones, sample pictures, etc..

But, as yislam says, I'm still about 13 mb down in memory from where I started a month or so ago, without any good explanation for it. At that time I had just installed 304 over 301 and in that process I picked up about 20 mb free app memory which I didn't expect to get then, and still don't understand why I did get it. But again, I've lost about 13 mb since then.

I suspect if I upgrade to 5.0.0.364 I'll again pick up lost memory, just like I did when I upgraded to 4.0.0.304, but unless I can be convinced that I won't just lose it again over time, there seems to be little point in upgrading.
