Lightbulb DIY Car mount

I"m sure you've noticed there are plenty to pick from so it all depends on your own needs. I wanted a mount that I could slip my Bold into one handed and would charge the bold without trying to plug in a USB cable while driving.

I ended up making my own by combining a cheap Ebay car mount and a blackberry desktop cradle. (with lots of cutting, trimming and generous slathering of epoxy). It ended up costing about $30 (instead of the $78 powered mounts I found) and the phone covers the uglier parts. An added benefit is the Blackberry desktop cradle is lighted so the cradle is easy to find in a car at night.

Why a manufacturer couldn't make something like this for under $50 is beyond me. They would sell plenty.

As for the method to my madness. After trimming the cradle to size, I but my Bold in a ziplock bag for protection and used it to act as a form for holding the the trimmed car cradle and desktop charge cradle together. I then used some super glue to tack the 2 parts together. I then used tape and Vaseline (Epoxy wont stick to it) to dam and mask the cradle for the 5 minute epoxy that holds everything together until it hardened.

Won't win ant beauty contests, but damn that's an awesome idea. I'm surprised no one had made an aftermarket with that feature. Patent it now before more ppl read

I have used Proclip for years. Although pricey they provide a custom mount to your vehicle, custom mount for the BB and power connection with no wires for the 9700. I also use this with my Goldwing.

Completely agree! I purchased the combo charger/holder and love that thing! I have had 4 berries now, and three of them have used the same car mount (just had to buy the actual phone holder specific to each device at the time).

I looked at both the Bury and the Proclip. I liked the Bury better just because it appeared to use the Cradle charging contacts rather then the Micro USB port which on 2 older phones I've had go bad with use over time. I built my ugly mount rather then buy the Bury Comfort mount just because mine was cheaper and I like to make things.

I agree with you on this. I hate the idea of a plugging in the usb port in a moving vehicle. I know they try to constrain the device to minimize issues, but since they have the option of using the contacts instead of the usb, I would rather they use those.

I also don't understand why they can't make a drop in like you did. I have a cheap drop in holder without a charger and my phone has never jumped out of it. I suppose if I roll my car over I'll be wishing I had a full enclosure, but otherwise I don't see the need.
