Default is the 8300 the new Treo?

Please Login to Remove!

I am sure all of you on this forum know of the Palm sale rumors.

Suitors that are being named are Nokia and Motorola as well as 2 PE guys.

Could RIM be the buyer? Is the 8300 the new Treo?

Palm Takeover Rumors Talked Up Yet Again

Palm Takeover Rumors Talked Up Yet Again
Posted By: Ryan on Tuesday, March 20, 2007 10:15:55 AM
Pretty much every technology related website and blog is recycling yet another highly speculative rumor regarding Palm's imminent sale. Unstrung, citing sources close to the situation, again claims Nokia and Motorola are leading bidders, and private equity firms Texas Pacific Group and Silver Lake Partners are also interested in buying the company.

Rumors of this nature have been one of the driving forces moving Palm's share price over the past two years. Late last year Palm CEO Ed Colligan emphatically told reporters that the company is not currently for sale nor had they made any overtures to find a buyer.

Palm is due to report its Q3FY07 results and hold its quarterly analyst/investor conference call this Thursday. To date, Palm representatives have refused comment on the rumors, but the issue is sure to come up during the call.

8300 the new Treo?? Only in a bad episode of The Twilight Zone.

I can't think of any reason RIM would buy Treo except to put them out of their misery!

Palm will be bought by either Motorola (who alrady bought Good) or Nokia. I personally think it will be Motorola, since Nokia owns Symbian and they don't exactly want to be putting out Nokia Treos running Windows Mobile v783 (Microsoft is still working out the bugs).

RIM? Not even in a bad dream.

Now that's funny! Those devices are so beautiful, but they're so unstable. Sounds like the average hot woman huh?

Very true. But with all the glitches with the Palm OS, poor battery life of their new 680/750, and overall stagnant research&development, the Treo doesn't appear to be much of a threat to RIM anymore. I don't see any reason they should purchase such a mess of a company unless they essentially want to create a touchscreen Blackberry.

Our org must still be dreaming as we are going the opposite way. We are getting rid of our BBs and heading towards treos. Bummer!

is the 8300 the new Treo?

What a dreadful thought

Somehow I dont think soat least not based on my personal experience with both devices. To date I have not worked with any device that is as fast, stable and reliable as a BlackBerry.

Cheers...

Personally I think that RIM at least will gain a little from Palm (some technology that treos have that RIM will use for the consumer market... I love BB for their stability but after reading all of Boy Genious interviews ...the 8300 (and RIM) and windows and whoever have a big showdown with the Iphone

IMO, the iPhone is more "sidekick" than a pro. phone. To me, its gimmicky to say the least. Tactile feel is crucial to those who use messaging capabilities extensively. I see alot of teens and college chicks digging the phone, but it won't have that widespread market that people seem to think it will. I predict the iPhone having a similar fate to that of a playstation 3. Everyone wants it initially, but then everyone realize its nothing new or revolutionary, and you have a boatload of units collecting dust. Although Apple fanboys seem much more diehard than their sony counterparts.

Um, no. A silver body and spaced keys doesn't make a device a Treo any more than a full qwerty keypad makes a device a "Blackberry killer"...

It is good job security for IT. If they're into wireless device support anyway... ;)

I think you're right but only until consumers realize that comparing the iPhone to WM devices and BB's is an apples and oranges and I guess bananas (pick your third fruit) comparison. Once you start actually researching the devices you'll see how different they are. The iPhone really is more of a Sidekick competitor as Ryangoo says. There will be Apple fanboys and other geeks who will jump to it but the latter won't be very happy with just EDGE and no third party app support. I mean, to me, it's like considering the Chevy SSR versus a real pickup truck if you want a flimsy analogy. The iPhone's not a one-size-fits-all solution as all the hype would lead you to believe (not any more so than any other device anyway).

I plan to get an iPhone but I don't disagree with most of what you say. One point though, the 8100/8300/8800 only have EDGE also. That's no better than the iPhone. And the iPhone will have Wifi at release.
