Some of my users have state database from 20-80 megs large with 20000+ mail items in them. Now it appears as though when I go to activate a new device for these users, once activation completes and prepopulation is done, the BES goes through all the mail items one by one.

The logs report "fetching modified documents..." and counts down those 20000+ items, unfortunately this happens very slowly and as a result once activation completes it can take hours for the next new email to arrive.

The obvious workaround is to delete profile and state database and start new for each device but i'm looking for an alternative.

Also, I have looked into state database pruning but unfortunately our users were given permission to "Keep Messages Forever" before I cam on board and i'm worried setting the pruning might affect this.

Has anyone run into this issue? RIM claims this is normal but I don't see how waiting 4-10 hours for a new email to arrive after activation is normal.

This is normal for it to take that long if the state db is that large. What's not normal is to allow the state db's to get that large. You might want to revisit db pruning and look at the settings. The state db's are keeping records of documents that the users have deleted and you should at least be getting rid of those references. I'd turn that on and schedule some downtime for your BES so you can run compact on the bes directory with Domino down to clean up those db's.

This must also be causing your BES server to take an extremely long time to initialize all of your users on startup...

Those state DBs do seem quite large.

Do you run regular domino maintenance on them? Compact / Fixup / Updall? Esp compact?
