Default Viscious RUMOR

Please Login to Remove!

heard a crazy rumor absolutely contrary to normal happening that VZW will be getting 8800 in March. Dont shoot the messenger it is just a rumor. I overheard Verizons Regional manager in my area talking to RIM guy about this today.

Please take with a large grain of salt

VZW has some new BB coming out in Q2/Q3 this year but who knows if it will be a variant of the 8800.

man that would be so great because i have an treo 700w and i find myself lost every day. i spend more time fixing the phone then i do using it. i almost wish i would have stayed with cingular but data was just to slow. One thing is for sure if i don't get rid of this thing soon i might jump off the next high thing i see.

i miss my 8700 so bad

also have seen this around the web: BlackBerryCool » BlackBerry 8830 rumour cycle begins

Would be nice not to have to have wait another year on Verizon before they get the 8800. I guess on that note, we'll have to see if this happens before Palm gets sold to Nokia.

Who Cares? Verizon will just disable the GPS anyway...might as well cripple the media, and the flash card, and how about the telephone while they're at it...

GPS will not be disabled, but you are more than likely going to have to pay for it, just like Cingular.

GPS on Cingular, using the 8800c anyway, is free.

You can use BB Maps for basic gps navigation. It's free but you have to load it by "less than straightforward" means. Google Maps doesn't support the GPS on the 8800 but just came out for GPS support for other phones (PocketPC I think). Also, there is a nice, program called Infoseek FindIt that uses the gps in the 8800; the program is free.

If you want to subscribe to TeleNav GPS Navigation, that costs $6 or $10 a month depending on the plan you get. It gives you what you'd expect from a gps, points of interest, re-routing, voice directions, etc. There are a few others, but not yet for the 8800 (Garmin and Mapquest).

My understanding is that Verizon has actually disabled the gps on the phone from working. You can't, for example, use BB Maps for navigation on the phone nor can you use any of the other free or pay services to get GPS information from the phone. I doubt anyone knows for sure what they'll do with the 88xx when they get it.

Regards-Michael G.

HUH? why do people come on here and speak from a position of ignorance?

I don't know where you heard one must pay for GPS on cingular, but that's 100% FALSE. It's either ENABLED, or it's NOT.. And on cingular, it's enabled, and thus free to use. If you choose to use telenav through cingular, then you must pay for...you are free to use a host of other FREE gps programs..

Ignorance?? Eat me!

Telenav is $10 a month... other free apps ok. But all I was saying is that Verizon is probably going to make us pay for it... they make us pay for everything else. And it CAN be disabled unless paid for.

Relax man! The difference though is that Verizon will probably charge you $xx just to surface the GPS coordinates, and any applications will be charged on top of that. By your previous comments, it appeared that you meant Cingular charged the same, when in actuality, GPS is enabled for FREE on Cingular, but if you WANT Telenav, it would cost extra.

Default Back on Track

Let's try to get this topic back on track............

FWIW...I talked to a number of different Verizon reps over the last week working out a couple of technical issues on a 7250. Each time I asked the rep what they knew about the 8800 or worldphone rumored to be coming soon. The normal Verizon reps knew nothing but each BB-specific rep that I talked two (3 different people) used the exact "can't confirm or deny" wording. Two of them said that if I was looking to upgrade and really wanted an 8800 rather than an 8703e that I should be patient for a little while longer.

A "little while" is relative. I can't see it coming out before summer, that would be so, unVerizonlike.

ET....I agree. I think we're looking at sometime during the summer. But even that early would be about 10 months earlier for the 8800 than I was expecting from Verizon.
