So, I've had this phone for a week and am loving it. I've noticed my battery life drop significantly though and I've been charging it every night. Should I continue doing this and also, I'm guessing that leaving Windows Live Messenger running has been eating the battery up, right?

Yes. These lithium batteries do not like to be drained down. Keep charging. WLM will impact as you noted

Compared to the Bold 9000, my battery used to die between 7-8pm everynight. Now at 10pm, I have just over 40% free. I huge improvement for me with the same apps.

Likewise. I used to have to switch Bold 9000's battery for a fresh one at least once a day or resort to a socket. 9700 runs all day with 30-40% left at the end, even after heavy use in a 3g area. I reckon it must be 50% or more battery life over 9000. Impressive.

Agreed - coming from an iphone 3gs, and even the bold, this trumps. 40% left this evening - iphone would have been dead bt 1pm, bold would be dead by 8. midnight, and 40%? awesome.

That's good to hear. I barely get a full "working" day out of my 3GS. I am looking forward to making the jump back to BB with the 9700.

So far the 9700 seems to retain battery charge much better than the 9000. I have a charger at home, in the car and at work, so its never been a serious problem for me. If you want a plummeting battery, try out the Droid! But that's another thread. I sometimes shut down the wifi and BT at night and there is virtual no battery loss at all overnight.

Glad you mentioned about the Droid! Maybe that's the reason no UK network will sell one because of the shocking battery life as you said. I did want a Droid, but considering what you said; I'm glad I got the 9700. I can run it a full day with 3G on with normal usage. Around half left before I go to bed and let it charge overnight.

I noticed serious battery drain at first, but it improved greatly after disabling WiFi. I don't normally need this [not hot spots at work or at home] so I activate it only occasionally. I also use my 9700 to play music while highway driving...very little drain even after 4-5 hours or more.

Yea, turning off your Wi-Fi will help a lot. Turn off automatic updates on Viigo, Twitter, and such. One last thing, lock your device when your not using it so that it dims right away when you accidentally press any key.

battery life on the 9700 is crazy compared to my G1.. from 9am to 9pm had about 50 percent battery left and that was while listening to music for 3hrs, texting, ubertwitter, facebook, sms, phonecalls, taking pics, using 3g and wifi and edge off and on all day..

Now I've read the opposite from what I'm seeing in some of these posts. Over on Crackberry, they recommend draining the batter completely and recharging it the first few times. I don't know but I took mine off the charger on Saturday morning at 6:30 and when I finally put it back on the charger Sunday night at about 9:30, I still had 25% left. This was with WiFi and 3G (non-3G area) running the whole time and moderate usage. Not to shabby. P.S. I did not dim any lights (like mine bright for my tired old eyes). I don't believe I have any apps that update automatically.
