Using a berry abroad without BIS

Hello everyone,
Just wanted to share some thoughts from an ex-Win Mobile user, see if I understood correctly. I really enjoy my Bold 9000, but I feel, without data service enabled in roaming (as happened to me in my last trip), it might be better to take any other phone, such as WM or iPhone.
I travelled abroad and did not enable data plan roaming as I thought it was way too expensive (per megabyte abusive cost)... So I used my Berry wherever i had wifi hotspot available.
- Without data plan what saved me was notifysync/EAS, as even blackberry email client doesnt work without BIS and the roaming enabled. But ActiveSync did the job.
- Skype (ishooter) didnt work either without data connection + even if I had roaming, Id have to know provider's APN as I travel around, switch it, etc. Makes me upset to not have Skype work under Wifi with Berry, specially knowing that the 1 thing IMHO really Berry does not have and all other phones have, a SIP client... :(
- Palringo worked for basic IM.
- Google maps didnt work needs data connection, I believe not even wifi it doesnt work right, shall install offline Trekbuddy...
So is that more or less it? If you dont wanna spend money on expensive roaming charges, the berry becomes quite limited with a wifi connection? :(
I was able to have email via EAS and chat via Palringo, but didnt get a way to use VoIP/Skype, Google Maps, etc...
Any tips?
Thanks.
