A dummy phone won't have an IMEI or PIN. Are you charging it with a wall charger?

A dummy phone could have an IMEI and PIN, but it could be cloned from an existing but not working.

If you can, take it to a shop, and ask them to try another battery in it. Could be a totally dead battery, but then again charging in the wall should turn it on at least.

Try everything use a USB lead to try and charge it, troubleshoot everything. Could be just a bad charger who knows.

You probably won't be able to exchange it under warranty as you didn't buy it from an authorized retailer. eBay is not.

I would take it to a store and ask to try a battery. If that fails I am afraid you options are very limited.

I suppose it's possible that someone put a sticker, etc. in a dummy phone. Usually, though, a dummy phone is pretty obvious. Have you contacted the eBay seller? You won't get any warranty from RIM. They don't directly warranty any devices. They warranty through the carriers only.

Your complaint is with who sold you the BB... A carrier did not. RIM did not.
You need to return it, simply.

yeah if it isnt a batter look like a long battle with ebay and teh seller in question

i'm tempted to have some one in the shop look at it and compare it too a "new" 8300 and see if in fact mine is a dummy if it isnt i'm sure it can be repaired by some one

I have had issues similar to this arise while making purchases (portable DVD player, universal remote) on ebay, and I have had great success with ebay taking action against the seller(s). The key is to begin the process ASAP, because everyone of the sellers attempted to say the product was delivered as intended. This is where you will have greater success in resolving your issue, since RIM and the carrier will dismiss your claim almost instantly.

Have you contacted the eBay seller?

that should be the first step. Tell them what the problem is, use the eBay mail system "contact the seller". Keep copies of all of your messages. Lots of times the seller will replace or refund to avoid negative feedback. If the guy is scum, he will not care and eBay will do little to teh seller. You are just out of luck!

Extremely cursory, silly if you had no payment protection ;)

Beyond that weigh it, strip SIM and SD out and if it's a couple of grams outside what it should be it's probably a couple of cans short of a six pack. Either way it wouldn't appear to work, the fix may be simple or may cost more than it's worth, only a knowledgable person getting inside it will be able to tell you (do RIM sell to outside repairers?).

cheers

Worm

Hmm, not my experience at all. I've had very good response from eBay/PayPal getting my money refunded when goods from eBay were not as advertised.

I agree with DallasFlier, Paypal and ebay have handled all of my claims in a satisfactory manner.
