I have seen a few old threads (closed) with members facing this problem. I faced this problem myself and spent a lot of time trouble-shooting the phone settings. Seem that it is a case of BB OS 6 incompatibility with some Wi-Fi security protocols/settings on your home Wi-Fi router.

If you have selected WEP(oldest protocol, what I used for a long time) and WPA2(latest), you may face the problem when your BB seem to be connected to Wi-Fi, you can access emails or chat on Wi-Fi BUT not browse.

Go into your Wi-Fi router as admin(I assume you know how: connect PC/notebook with LAN cable to router via IP address 192.168.1.1). Go to Wi-Fi security settings. Select "WPA only". Number of bits encryption seems not be a problem.

Go back to your BB smartphone Wi-Fi network settings. Amend from WEP/WPA2 to WPA and key in your password, and hopefully your BB can now work beautifully on Wi-Fi and saves you $$ on data charges.

Note that this does not help if you try to connect to public places Wi-Fi.

The IP address you give is not universal. The suggestions you give dont make sense. If you can use the BB via WIFI to go anywhere on the internet then browsing will also work. The encryption method must match. The encryption bit length must also match.
