Company got me a new Torch to replace an aging (but useable) 8830. Loved it for the most part, but after about 4 weeks, I noticed a grinding sound when sliding the keyboard in and out. The grinding got worse as time went on, and after a couple of days, the phone ear speaker stopped working. I could still use the phone using the speakerphone option, but could not use it as a normal phone. A day later, the torch was (forgive the pun) snuffed out.
Sent it back to my IT dept, who sent it to RIM, and now I am stuck with a loaner (9000 - what a craptacular phone that is).
The funny thing is, my IT dept told me when I got it that they were worried that the Torch's achilles heel would likely be the slider keyboard. Makes sense - lots of small cheapo plastic moving parts.
We're running 6 in our company, which is a limestone mining operation. About half of them are out in the worst of worst areas, and we've had no problems whatsoever yet.
Seidio case on all of them and an Invisibleshield on the screen. Great so far.
