Default BB Maps now works on AT&T Bold!?!?

Please Login to Remove!

Not sure if this is new or not. Yesterday when waiting for BBM 5.0 to become available, I went to the Blackberry HELP site from my Blackberry. I saw Blackberry Maps available for download. I tried it and sure enough it allowed me to download and the icon remains present even after resending service books. I guess they needed it to work with BBM 5.0 or decided it wasn't interferring with AT&T NAVIGATOR sales. Now if BBM 5.0 would only add the proximity alert.

Great find. I can confirm it works. Hope we don't have it taken away again.

Thanks. I was afraid of even posting it, didn't want to tip off AT&T if they hadn't figured it out yet. xxx9786;

The page with the download link says it's only for devices running device software v4.1 or v4.2

When I try to download anyway I get:
Sorry your device (AT&T Bold) does not meet the system requirements that are needed to support BlackBerry Maps.

That's odd. I couldn't tel you if it said it was only for 4.1 or 4.2 yesterday. I didn't read that far. I just downloaded it and then checked to make sure I had the BB Map icon. I did. I then actual rebooted and resent service books just to make sure I didn't lose the icon. It is currently still there and is working 100%. Under applications it shows it is version 4.6.0. I am running the latest AT&T software 4.6.0.297 (517). Maybe they read the post and changed there download link. xxx9786;

BlackBerry Maps has always worked regardless of AT&T hiding the icon via a service book. I have BB Maps installed and can access it via other applications that use a mapping application (like Poynt or BBM, for example). I just can't access it directly, which for me isn't a big deal. I only use it when applications need to display a map.

I know that. Several apps use it for there mapping program, but I think it is nice to be able to hit just one button instead of opening up another app and doing a couple more steps to get there.

Oh well mine is working for now, I'm sure they will find away to disable direct access if again if it really isn't supposed to be on there.

Ah, well ok. I never actually used BlackBerry Maps as a stand-alone application as I find Google Maps to be much better.

I agree. I just don't like restrictions. If an app is available why try to hide it from the customer. I don't see why AT&T would be concerned with it competing against there subscription Navigator service, it isn't even turn by turn. it is a nice app if you are driving along , know pretty much were you are going, but need help with maybe finding an up coming turn or cross street. I do think BB Maps is a little faster in that scenario.

You could always use Google maps instead.

I have ATT Navigator but it's a pain. BB maps is simple and works well. I also had Google but removed it a while ago. Seems like ATT is just blocking it for some BB's and not others. If I look at the loaded APPs it is listed but as mentioned in other posts , it is blocked or hidden and I have not been able to find or unblock it.

frustrating.

Cool Try Amaze GPS

Hello,

Try Amaze GPS www.amazegps.com. Works great, has voice navigation, maps, satellite view, points of interest. Includes US, Canada, Puerto Rico (PR). Works great and it's free. I also use Google Maps, which is pretty good, but Amaze is even better. You can also try Nav4all (still free, but next year probably will be sold), although I find Amaze to be better. I have a Curve 8900 on AT&T and never manage to make BBMaps work. I even removed and reinstalled it, but there is always a file missing, which prevents the Icon from showing up. You know how it is, these phone companies want to charge for everything.

Only proble is that it costs $99.00, and it still doesn't have all the features that Amaze has, and Amaze is free. For example, Amaze can display the map with a compass, and always pointing up (whis is better for reading when you are driving), you can have a hybrid view (map plus satellite, both at the same time), more options for controlling voice, saving favorites, and so on. I like Garmin, trying the 7 day trial, but I am not convinced to pay $99.00 (I would if it was better than Amaze or Nav4all, but it isn't).
