Thanks...however I am pretty sure the problem lies within the BB 9700 itself.
And... I swung by Best Buy Mobile at Chinook Mall and the guy there [name of Juan] fiddled with it and got it going. He says he didn't do anything special....just a battery pull and poking at the menu. So now I'm left with a puzzle...it may be just a case of 'the funny noise under the hood goes away in the presence of a mechanic'... I'll watch it along...with luck it will last until the 9900 is released in a month or two [or four or five or whatever...].
I also discovered at the Bell Mobility store that the no-hassle replacement warrantee I thought I was paying for simply allows me to buy a replacement handset for $150...not quite what I was told when I signed up....
. I guess I really should have read the fine print in the contract rather than listening to the salesman...
It will be interesting to see if the 'free upgrade' I am due will apply to new products...
