Smile Please PIN my stolen Blackberry

Please Login to Remove!

Fellow Blackberry users -- can you please send a PIN message to my stolen Rogers Blackberry?

I have reported it as stolen to the police a week and a half ago. I note that it is now accepting PIN messages so its found a buyer.

The PIN number is 20652CC0

Am requesting that the buyer contact [email address]

Appreciated!

If you are unsure how to send a PIN message:

1. Select the Compose icon (the open envelope and pencil).
2. In the "To:" list, scroll to the correct contact. Click the trackwheel to display a drop-down menu for the contact.
3. Select PIN from the menu for the contact.
4. Compose your message, and send it as usual.

When the message is sent, it will be routed using the PIN rather than the email address.

Okay i just sent a message for you. good luck! You can always have your carrier do a PIN block on it with RIM and they wont be able to use it. Just a thought.

You can send the PIN messages yourself from your PC.

JSanders: Another fine tip! I was not aware of that. However, doesn't this raise the possibility of spamming via BBMessenger?

No, you are sending a PIN message, not BBMessenger... two different things.

Thanks for the web2pin link -- that's pretty amusing.

I've also been adding myself as a BlackBerry Messenger contact and waiting for the request to be denied. Doing it every few minutes.... sometimes I don't even wait for the denial and delete the request only to send a fresh one!

The PINs are definitely getting through. Haha!

I wonder if I'm just an asshole or borderline neurotic? Likely the latter. ;)

What will this accomplish? Report it stolen to the carrier so they can disable it. I would think that would be the best way to have it returned if someone not involved in the theft has it. Constantly sending it messages will not accomplish anything.

I just sent 3 PING!!! PIN messages (typed it in manually) and requested to be added to BBM. The PIN messages show delivery confirmation.

This has already been done two weeks ago, sir.

There was a period (1 week) where the phone did not accept PIN messages after which I noted it began to be used again last week-end.

The reason for this is that:

1) A new SIM card has been placed in the device
2) When a mobile is lost / stolen the majority of carriers do not actually add it to the IMEI block list and are not willing to.

Further to item 2) though the architecture for appropriate IMEI blocking is in place and 40 large carriers claim to incorporate it (including my own) the carriers are driven by profit and they do NOT typically do IMEI blocking. Rogers (my carrier) for instance does IMEI blocking only if display cellphones are stolen from their stores. When a customer loses their phone they simply nuke the SIM card.

Why do they do this you might ask?

Don't forget that in so doing their customer will have to get a new cell phone from somewhere... and odds are they will purchase from the same carrier.

Such is the nature of the business and if you investigate this you will find most carriers are driven by the same thing - GREED.

Protect your devices and work every angle you can. Lock your BlackBerries with an appropriate "Owner" message -- consider using a hot glue gun to fix your SIM card within the device or addition of screws to the back.

Also, it is important to maintain positive control of your device.

Very. If only I could control every situation.... but alas I am not a god.

If we can evolve the technology to where I can have a BlackBerry implanted under the skin I'll take it.
