Default VZW 8703e OS upgrade issues

Please Login to Remove!

I too just upgraded my VZW 8703e to the new OS, and here are two observations (nothing new based on other posts):

1. Moving from application to application is a bit sluggish; more so than in previous OS
2. On the Verizon Theme, Options/Status shows battery is charged to 100% but the battery meter only shows 3 out of 4 bars and never gets any higher.

I followed the upgrade instructions, except for deleting the vendor.xml file. Any ideas on why this file should be deleted before the upgrade? FWIW, the date stamp on this file after the upgrade is 10/16/07.

Default Deleting the vendor.xml file

Pkg Ver: 4.2.1.174
App Ver: 4.2.1.1.06
Plt Ver: 2.3.0.20

Download here.

Instructions for installing on any 8703 from any carrier:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. It's 4.2 SP2 and can be downloaded from the link above or Click Here. or from the Verizon site linked above.
2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.
3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
4. Plug in BB and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.
The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device.

What is the reason behind deleting the vendor.xml file? I did not delete this file before upgrading, and ended up experiencing the battery meter issue not showing 100%. FWIW, the date stamp on this file after the upgrade is 10/16/07.

Deleting the vendor.xml allows users on other than Verizons network to install the OS. Such as Sprint users. Since you are on Verizon you do not need to delete the file.

My thinking is that the old today themes call the old version name, which does not work on this OS version. I tried making a new today theme in Plazmic but it still will not allow it to load in the theme screen. If anyone knows how to edit them to call the new module I think they may work.

Thoughts anyone?!
I don't think so because rogers bphone today theme requires the os to be 4.2 or higher on the 8700 series. The icon and zen style themes work perfect but the today one doesn't.

All 3 styles don't work when the os is 4.1

I'm also on Sprint....upgraded today....and I'm NOT seeing this.

BUT....when I missed a call, I went in and either "opened" or deleted the "missed call message" that's in the message list.

Once I did that, it went away. I had to do that before the upgrade too though.

I too miss the Dimension Today theme, and the Vodaphone is nowhere as good.

Another issue I'm having is the inability to accept or deny meeting requests, I know I could do that before I upgraded. Any ideas?

Thanks,

I wonder if you rename the module and reload your handheld if that would fix it...

I copied and renamed the cod file, added it to the blackberry.alx file but it will not load. How do you add the module? Does the OS have to be readded?

So it shows in your modules screen but the themes still don't work? That is a bummer.

Did anyone have problems with ToDoMatrix or IdeaMatrix not loading? I receive this similar error for each:

Error starting com_rex_ToDoMatrix: Symbol 'UiApplication.pushModalGlobalScreen' not found.

Ok, nevermind. RexWireless tech support is relentlessly phenomenal.

Thanks for the write up.

Alltel 8703e experience.
Upgrade from v4.1.0.377 to 4.2.1.106(verizon)
After the DM finished I was prompted with a setup wizard.
Cancelled.
Enterprise Activation began syncing.
Theme didn't work.Reverted back to default.
All seems fine so far.

Can anyone provide more info on the location of the voice recorder / voice notes? I made sure all home page apps were viewable, looked in messenger, even checked in the settings/applications area, but nothing is showing.

Any ideas?
