Default 8830: can't open attachments

Please Login to Remove!

Hi everyone,

I am a 7-year BB user, going back to the 950 days (950, 957, 7510, 7520, 8700, 8703e, 8830). I just bought the 8830 last week, and am pretty pleased with it so far - some getting used to with various things, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

One thing I am having trouble with is attachments. I havent been able to open, or even have the option to open, any attachments. I have tried PDF, XLS, RTF, DOC and JPEGs. None of these prompt the "Open Attachment" option to show up, as they have in past models.

I have downloaded the DocHawk PDF and Graphical Attachment app, and have gotten this to work, but I'd rather be able to open files with the software that has been built into the handheld in past models (and do it for free).

I have BB unlimited data, calling plan and tethering plans with my service... have been able to tether via bluetooth, surf the web and do everything else I should be able to, except this. It is a big part of my business to open attachments, and not having the ability to do so as I have in the last is cramping my enjoyment of this device.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.
Chris

Chris,
I have only been able to open Excel attachments and nothing else. I will let you know if I hear anything about why that is.

You probably don't have BES or not using your provider.blackberry.net email address.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry8830/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

hakaida442, Why should that matter? I have used the same email address and settings via redirector as I always have, and never had this problem before.

jackyerlate, thanks. i'd be interested to hear anything on this.

I had this same problem, and called Verizon. the customer service person conferenced in a tech from their blackberry support area, and they told me that their literature says that if you are using the redirector (which I was) that it would not allow you to view or send attachments. I couldn't believe it. So they walked me through setting the phone up to use the BIS, and its all fine now. I was fortunate enough that my company's exchange server doesn't have a firewall up to prevent it working with the BIS.

You can give Verizon a call if you don't believe me. I know you said you've used the redirector in the past. I pretty much told them that I found it hard to believe that the redirector wouldn't support the use of attachments, but they said its right in their notes about it. Is it just this phone? Seems like a step backwards for RIM.

If this is, in fact, truth about the redirector, then it is definitely a step backward for RIM and/or Verizon. I have been using the redirector since I first got a BB in 2000 - never a BES - so it baffles me how they would disable this feature.

I will be calling VZW this morning...

Well, if its not true, be sure to post back here. I don't have a problem going through the BIS, but I'd still like to know if its true or not, in case I ever want to go back to using the re-director.

Buckeye, did they set up a rule in Outlook to forward emails on to the BB?

I am on hold with VZW now...

No, I didn't have to do anything on my desktop/company end to get the emails to the BIS.

not sure about other carriers, but I know that at&t, need either bis or bes for attachments...one way that i know that you can get around using a redirector and still get attachments is utilizing the BIS redirect (aka: mail connector). This acts similar to the desktop redirector, only should give you the ability to view attachments via redirection...

that's my two cents.

Thanks, guys.

Turns out that RIM did change something according to the three techs I spent 90 minutes on the phone with this morning, and they did need to set me up on the BIS... so far it seems to be working out fine, so I will consider the problem solved.

Chris,
Do you know what they need to do on the BIS? I still can't open Word Docs. but can open Excel Docs.

Jackyerlate, the tech set me up by somehow connecting my Exchange email address to the BIS. He went to the blackberry.com site that is for Verizon users, and set this up.

I have tried JPEGs, PDFs, DOCs, XLSs... they all open.

I can open most standard attachments, but is there a way to open Windows Media or Quicktime files? I was thinking one could save it and open it in the Media player perhaps?

Thumbs up

Logging on to bell.blackberry.com and setting up a filter for each account worked for me too.
