I was down to 9% remaining and plugged it in. In less than 2 hours it was up to 100%. Is that what others experience?

It would depend on what (exactly) you were plugging in and what kind of charger you use. If you charge too fast you can reduce the lifetime of the battery.

I use the OEM charger...the one included with the phone i.e. mini USB into a small 2 prong electrical plug.

Given this is my only charger how would I charge it...slowly?

your charger will charge rapid at first when charging then slow about 3/4 away before fully charged..so really no need to worry...2 hours is a normal on that type of new battery with your device. Mine is the same.
