Question How does GAL lookup work

Please Login to Remove!

Hello!

We have automated BlackBerry devices provisioning for Hosted Exchange 2003 SP2 environment (based on Microsoft Hosted Messaging and Collaboration HMC 3.5).

Almost all is going right and working, but there is an issue: GAL lookups.
When one tries to perform GAL lookup from device by email or mailbox name, it always return expected results, but when one tries to search by other fields (like First name, Last name etc) it is unclear which of them are being searched and what is the match criteria: "field starts with...", "field contains..." and so on. As result the lookup could return extra-results or return less than expected.
I've tried to find the answer in RIM docs and googled a lot, but without success.

Could someone clarify the way Exchange BES GAL lookup works? Could lookup behaviour be affected by HMC environment (it has slightly different security settings for DGAL and it uses Active Directory Listing mode)?

I'm not exactly sure what you are seeing and I am definitely not familiar with hosted Exchange/BES, but, on the "to" line (or in several other places where you might need GAL) you just type in part of the user's first or last name or part of their e-mail address and it will bring up a list of all the matches in the GAL. There is no specifying whether you want it to search by first name or last name. it does it automatically. Does that help?

Perhaps you could include a screenshot of what you are seeing on the BB
