Arrow Knowledge Sharing - Service Impacting issues after upgrading to BES Domino 5.0 SP3

Please Login to Remove!

Overview

First, eliminate any issues that are caused by known IBM® Lotus® Domino® issues and BlackBerry® Enterprise Server issues. This is applicable if customers are running BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 SP3.

Make sure that IBM Lotus SPR# JPAI8E4NTW has been addressed by installing IBM Lotus Domino 8.5.2 Fix Pack 2 or higher on the Lotus Domino Mail Servers the BlackBerry Enterprise Server interacts with (KB27091).

BlackBerry Critical Advisory available

Remarks: So now we need to patch ALL Domino servers, not just the mail servers, including the BES server.

An update is available which resolves the following issues:

KB27021 - Blackberry Enterprise Server outage caused by Out Of Office Profile for a particular users mail file
KB27246 - Blackberry Enterprise Server outage during the processing of tasks and or dates are set incorrectly
KB27130 - BlackBerry Enterprise Server agent crashes on removal of a user
KB27046 - BESD: server crashed while attempting to process PIM Sync for user.
KB26185 - High CPU usage is seen while doing OTAFM folder scanning of large mail files with large numbers of documents and folders.

Note: This update is available upon request.
Remarks: This is what we know as Qiuck Fixes!

So RIM and IBM have me confused.

(1) RIM's newest Critical Issue DT 1431427 states:

Summary
After you upgrade to BlackBerry® Enterprise Server 5.0 SP3, you might encounter problems with the IBM® Lotus Notes® servers if you configured transactional logging for Lotus Domino. This issue is documented by IBM as SPR JPAI8E4NTW. For more information, see https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docv...g21470828&wv=1.

Impact
Lotus Domino servers might become unresponsive.

Probability of occurence
The probability of occurrence is high.

Resolution
Upgrade all Lotus Domino servers to version 8.5.2 FP2 or later.

(2) IBM's Potential hang while upgrading the BlackBerry Enterprise Server on IBM Lotus Domino to 5.0.3 states:

Fix: The fix for SPR JPAI8E4NTW is in 8.5.2FP2 and 8.53. The mail servers which interact with the BES must be upgraded. The BES server does not need to be upgraded.

Here's the confusion:-
So do we patch BES + Mail Domino servers? Or just the mail servers now? Domino folks, anybody has this verified?

I haven't performed either upgrade yet, but after conferring with my Domino Administrator, we have agreed that Domino needs be upgraded first to 8.5.2 FP2 or 8.5.3. (We're going to pursue the 8.5.3 route when released.) Then once Domino 8.5.3 is stable and chugging along as it should, upgrade BES to 5.0.3. (We'll give it about 2 weeks or so before the BES 5.0.3 upgrade.)

The way we read the articles tells us that if you upgrade BES to 5.0.3 before Domino, you could potentially encounter the problems described. If so, upgrading Domino to one of those versions will fix your issue and BES doesn't need to be touched again.

Thumbs up Re: Knowledge Sharing - Service Impacting issues after upgrading to BES Domino 5.0 SP

Thanks for your response DarthBBerry. I have verified with support that SPR JPAI8E4NTW is an issue with the Domino mail servers that BES Domino server (with transaction logging enabled) interacts with.

So the mail servers would want to be on Domino version 8.5.2FP2 or 8.5.3. The other workaround would be to trun off transaction logging on the BES Domino server.

Sharing...

RIM now has a warning disclaimer on the SP3 download:

Please Note: Prior to upgrading please refer to the following Critical Advisory (DT1431427) if you are not running Domino 8.5.2 FP2 or higher.

Hi Guys. just a question though, are these updates no longer needed when your Domino servers are already on 8.5.2 FP2?

An update is available which resolves the following issues:

KB27021
KB27246
KB27130
KB27046
KB26185

Thanks!

Hi edwintg,

Upgrading to Domino 8.5.2FP2 only resolve the issue - SPR# JPAI8E4NTW and not those RIM's KB articles' issues. Those are BES issues.

Hope this helps.
