Default On BES 4.1.7 & Exchange 2007 - moving to Exchange 2010 ?!

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,
Currently working in a environment with BES 4.1.7 on Server 2003 SP2, with Exchange 2007 SP2.

The business are now looking at migrating to Exchange 2010 SP1, and BES is one factor that has to be resolved.

For starters, from looking at the compatibility matrix, is it true to say that BES 5.0.2 is recommended for Exchange 2010 SP1?

From here, I was looking for some advice on how to go about this. I presume an in-place upgrade of BES 4.1.7 to 5.0.2 is not a good idea?

I am thinking that setting up a new server to run BES 5.0.2 would be a better idea (on 64-bit Server 2008 SP2).

I am also wondering if it is worth getting the new server with BES 5.0.2 working with Exchange 2007, and then migrating to Exchange 2010. It would possibly be simpler to simply focus on getting it ready for Exchange 2010?

Hope this makes sense. Any experience or feedback from people who've done a similar upgrade would be greatly recommended!

Good idea to do this part first

Thanks very much knottyrope.

So it looks like the best way to go its to get Exchange 2010 up and running (in testing), and then get the BES 5.0.2 on a new 64-bit server, and begin the migration testing?

You have 2 migrations. get a new BES 5 working first on exchange 2007.

then follow this.
KB22601-How to migrate the BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 from Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 or 2007 to Microsoft Exchange Server 2010

Is it actually possible to do an in-place upgrade from BES 4.1.7 to 5.0.2, on the same hardware/OS? (server 2003 SP2 is compatible according to the matrix.

Thanks CanuckBB. Has anyone here tried it? Or any advice on it. (from my reading it seems like its not the preferred method - may suit us as it may be cheaper and since we have a dwindling number of Blackberry users).

I did it to 5.0. Simple and painless. May not be preferred, but it does work.
