The usb on my wife's 8100 crapped out. Bummer. But I grabbed my old 8700g I've hung onto, restored the 8100 backup, put in wife's SIM, put battery back in, went to my-tmobile, got prompted to change PIN, and inside of about 30 minutes wife is back in business until she decides what she wants to do about a new blackberry. I mean, just how cool is that.

Well, my wife didn't appreciate just how cool it all was. But I'm still hyped about it.

She hasn't really had to use it yet. I think she will like typing on it, especially after sure type, but it is a huge device compared to her pearl. I'm curious to see if she'll choose QWERTY over compact when she chooses a new phone. I think she's hooked on blackberry, but we'll see.

I am starting to find my blackberry pretty cool itself, and am using lots more than expected.

It's nice how easy the set up is and how easy it is to transfer everything eh? I'd be pumped about that too, it's nice when everything is so user friendly, and gsm is great.

I'm probably more than a little bit naive. The blackberry was my first mobile device, and I don't know any other carrier but t-mobile. We had a family cellphone with alltel for years, but I didn't use it. I fought cell phones, even professionally, until it got to the point I needed email anytime anywhere. But the blackberry continues to surprise me with features and functions I wasn't aware of but glad to find.

I've swapped to a new blackberry before, of course. But I'm still psyched over the painless recovery when the pearl failed. Like the boy scout who's prepared and it pays off one day. And I had just gotten my wife to start backing up. She wouldn't do it. I would do it for her when I thought about it. If it had failed a month ago, she wouldn't have had a current backup, and no guarantee I could have backed her up with bluetooth after the usb broke. (I still can't get bluetooth sync to work with the netbook and my 8820. Can connect, but that's it.)

So, everyone who isn't doing regular, frequent backups, you know who you are . . . Start doing it! You'll be glad you did.

CDMA has just gotten easier to switch devices, at least on Sprint. There's an online "activate new device" area on your Sprint page. You can get it done in about 5 minutes, with the switch taking about 15 minutes on Sprint's end. Previously you had to either log into a chat session or call Sprint on a different phone. THAT sucked. But now you do the new device activation and then use the standard BIS page PIN/IMEI switch. Still not as smooth as GSM and just popping your SIM card in a new phone, but it's progress!

Technology is great overall

I've only had a cdma phone once, and there are still a lot of things I don't understand about it personally, but it's good they are coming up with more options for cdma users.

It was a paygo phone, I lost it, and just stopped topping it up. I don't know if it ended up being much use to someone. They couldn't put a sim in it, but I guess they could have activated on their own account.
