This has been asked before and STILL no answer!

So far from what I see, you can disable the clicking noise of the trackball and of standard keypresses so that your Pearl is completely silent... with one exception! HOW DO YOU TURN OFF KEYPRESS TONES FOR THE NUMBERS ON THE NUMBER PAD!!!???

I can't figure it out. The night I got the phone I was in bed playing with it like a little kid in a candy store while my girlfriend was sleeping. I was facing the other way so the bright screen wouldn't wake her and I turned all the tones and clicks and whatever other noises all off so the phone would be silent. THEN from the home screen I hit one of the numbers to play with the phonebook interface where it brings up a contact by hitting corresponding keys to the person's name, and low and behold the phone is making dial tones!

Now maybe during the day they're not so bad, but have the phone up close to your face while playing with it in a dead silent room at night and you'd be amazed at how loud the damn thing is!

Has anyone figured out how to turn these tones off? This is the last key to the puzzle of making the phone silent.

Thanks in advance, and PS, I've looked at all the profiles so far and none seem to fix this by choosing one over the other. And I also don't care to have to use a different profile just for this feature. It should be something you can adjust/disable in all profiles if need be.

I don't have and 8100 so I can't be sure about that model in particular but I can tell you that with the 71xx series, there is no way. It can't be done nadda, zero, zilch. I was hoping that with 4.2 it might be possible but from the sounds of your experience RIM may not have remedied the problem.

On the topic of audio annoyances, it also drives me nuts that a dropped call will occasionally start blaring out through the speakerphone, even when the call was over a BT headset.

I'm talking about that EEE ERRR EEE ERRR noise.

Gee, thanks, I needing a screeching alarm to tell me I just got cut off.....

I think in time those bugs will be fixed. A software release (which is few and far between, I know) may take care of that if we make it known to RIM that we really hate those issues. Show them that it can keep people from buying the 8100.

Go to options then screen/key...
There is an option to mute the keys there!! You can set it to 3 different levels plus mute.

There is? Whoa. I didn't know that. All this hype about it not being able to be turned off. Oops.

it still sounds like a a telephone when you dial. that does not stop the dialing noise, just the typing noise.

Just a thought, but maybe they have a problem with it discerning whether or not youre on a phone call. When on a call you will need these sounds to operate touch-tone menus.

Although my Office Nortel Phone doesnt do it...Maybe the PBX handles it..

Hell I dont know. It doesnt bother me. When Im in bed with my girlfriend, the last thing I am doing is fondling my BlackBerry

This will not be fixed in any update! The reason being, when you call automated services, the computer needs those number tones in order to know what option you want. If the tones were gone, you would get nowhere within the menu.

not a good example. the nokia i was using until the beginning of the month was dead silent when it did keytones while i was dialing a number. THEN when in a call and i needed to follow prompts/dial an extention/etc, it would either make the tones or be dead silent. this WAS AN OPTION!

you ever pre-programmed a number to dial that had a pause in there and then autodialed an extention, or your voicemail password for instance? this is a case where you would want it to be silent. why? have you ever had a bluetooth headset on and hit a number key? the key tone can be deafening!

so ya. i still stand by that the phone should at least have the option to mute key presses. and no you dont need the keypress tones ALL the time. you are indeed correct about the other end needing it, but we, the user, shouldnt have to hear it.

on a lighter note, a buddy of mine is one of the programmers for RIM and the blackberry OS and i told him about the bug on the weekend. he was shocked! i told him and he said he knew right away where in the OS it needs to be modified to fix this problem and will report it at work in their bugtracker today. ill follow up with him to see if he does it.

i know he's busy tho right now cuz he said the programmers are going full throttle working on the 8800. he was telling me its gonna be insane we only know the specs right now, but what other features and what the new specs will let the device do thats above and beyond what were used to is really the exciting part.

if he gives me any feedback regarding the key tone bug ill let you guys know
