Clicking on the icon for Keyboard Lock indicates that the keyboard is locked. The problem is that it is NOT locked, although it requires me to go through the little procedure to "unlock".

Essentially, it appears that my keyboard will not lock, although the icon indicates it is locked all the time. It is actually not locked at all.

Any thoughts about what might be going on?

With the BB, Lock doesn't mean keyboard lock, it means *device* lock - meaning the device is in password mode, keeping the content protected. No way to lock the keyboard like you can on other phones - would be nice tho!

I'm not sure what you mean.....

While on the home screen press the "K" key. That locks the keypad.

Try a chastity belt? Lock on a BB means you need a pasword to use it, except for emergency calls. The other green guy is right.

Well, now.. what I'd really like to see is a *true* keyboard/device lock that disables all the keys (and click wheel, esc, etc) until you do a particular combination - ala Nokia phones.

It's prevents any key press from working until you press the proper key sequence to unlock it.

Well - no. You can still "accidently" trigger something like a 911 call if the device is in your pocket.. the scroll wheel gets twisted, and then clicked. A true keyboard lock locks aout *all* functions until a sequence is pressed. Like on Nokia, you press "Menu-*" to lock/unlock. until you press that sequence again, *nothing" works on the phone. Great for carrying it in your pocket. But you can still answer calls.

911 is the ONLY thing that you can press while in keylock.

Again it's virtually the same as the Nokia key lock.

I'm sure that was done intentionally by RIM in case, god forbid, you're ever in a situation where you need to call 911 and don't have time to be messing around trying to unlock the keypad.

Well, that being said, let's drag it out a bit longer...the main problem with the keyboard lock on the blackberry is that it's rather easy to accidentally make an emergency call. Since touching the trackwheel brings up only 3 options, any one of those three is rather easily activated. Including the unlock.

Another issue, for those of us with little kids, is that it is VERY easy for VERY young children to accidentally unlock the device or make a 911 call. Even the old blackberry keyboard lock was better - requiring two distinct key strokes. That made the odds of accidentally unlocking the device quite unlikely.

One of the options is to always use the holster...the magnet disables all keys until it is removed, at that point the keypad activates. You could also get a third party "soft" holser with a magnet and remove the belt clips and other items until you have a blackberry sheath.

I think BB's key lock works exactly like Nokia's . i have never used anything other than Nokia and BB.. I know if you have the phone in you pocket it could be pressed and still there are combos that you nedd to press in order to make a call

Anyone interested in making a program that offers a true key lock function similar to the Nokia? I just gave up my phone and went completely BB. (Best thing ever..)

It would need to work in conjunction with the current "key locK" function. Basically, allow a key combination to lock the BB and then the same key combination to unlock it....

The lock function on my blackberry is exactly like that of my old Nokia.

If you take a locked Nokia and type in 911, or *911, it will let you call 911 without unlocking.

THis seems to be the same with the blackberry, other than that, my blackberry stays locked until I unlock it, just like my old Nokia.

It does almost the same thing as the Nokia, but there are a few differences:

1. On my BB, you can select emergency call and then yes.
2. To unlock my BB I have to type in my long password.

On my Nokia:
1. To dial emergency you have to press 9 1 1 then SEND
2. Lock and unlock is Menu - * and only if you security lock it do you have to type a code.

It would be nice to just keyboard lock (until the security lock kicks in) so that I can walk around with my BB in my pocket without worrying about calling someone on accident. Or having to type my password to make a phone call. Also, there is no callerid name when your BB is locked since the content protection is on.

How does the magnet work to disable the keyboard? I have inadvertently called 911 twice so far with my old 6280. I am at the point of replacing the thing with something else that won't call 911 so easily.

I have a nice aftermarket holster. Can I add some sort of magnet sticky to it to completely disable the keyboard while in-holster?

Or should I look for a used newer model?

You need to go options > security and set it to lock in holster.
