Sorry to resurrect such an old post. Saw this post after using the search function for another topic.

As John Clark said, ALL electronics have to off during critical phases of flight. Simply telling a flight attendant (after climbing through 10,000 ft) that your cell phone is in "airplane mode" is enough to end that story. Most flight attendants will be cool with that. With the two carriers I've been with, our manual stated that cell phones are ok for use inflight so long as they're in airplane safe mode. You'll come across an old crotchety flight attendant sometimes who will make you turn it off. Do what he/she says and after they walk away, turn it back on discretely. We all know you do that anyway with your other electronics on takeoff and landing anyway.

The problem comes from passengers using electronics when they're not supposed to (e.g., during taxi, during the demo, etc.) and they're OBVIOUS about it, as if to say F.U. When it comes down to it, we hate taking your fun away, but we have a job to do. It gets quite frustrating to see someone on their iPods after I've made three separate announcements telling everyone electronic devices have to be turned off.

Sorry I just had to respond to a post that I happen to be an expert in. Lord knows I'm not an expert on RIM devices.

Hate to pee on everyone's parade - I fly on a weekly basis and always keep my Pearl on - just keep the device on quiet - obviously still alive to talk about it. Don't believe this mumbo jumbo about interfering with the plane's control - that's why the pilot is there.

If the BlackBerry has trouble synching with a Bluetooth device - or just simply another BB - do you actually believe it could take down one of Boeing or Airbus' finest ??? It hasn't to date and never will !!!!

Jifffer,
You are absolutely right. I leave mine on in the Flight Deck and can verify it does nothing to our navigations systems. However, it does interfere with my $1000 Bose Noice Cancelling headset-sometimes momentarily cutting out the audio altogether when data comes and goes. Probably because the battery pack for the headset sits right next to my hip where my phone usually is. But other than that I've never noticed any problem.

That being said it's still a Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) that you comply with crewmembers instructions as well as turn off your electronic equipment. You can, technically, be hit with a big fine if the Flight Attendant catches you and wants to push the issue. It's just not worth it. That also, being said, I've left mine on before as well. Just wanted you to know what can happen.

You should also be considerate to other passengers. Just because you believe that they can not interfere (which you have no evidence of), I am sure 90% of the passengers have no idea, and turn off their devices because they are told too. And because we trust our flight crew, most will believe that electronic devices will disrupt airplane communications and could lead to a crash. No need to set anyone off. Just turn it off until there is a public report that says otherwise.

Do you fly 135, JC?

Is that a Falcon in your avatar?

No, and No.

91 and it's a Gulfstream G200. But I have flown 135 and 121 in previous lives.

Just make sure you turn the phone off when they say to and keep the wireless off at all times. When you're allowed to use electronic devices, you'll be able to watch your movies. It's not wise to argue with any flight crew because that could get you in a lot of trouble......ie. the air marshall kicks your @#$ and/or you get arrested when you get off the plane.

I have gotten a lot of grief before from a flight attendant, had to show them that the radio part was off. They actually verified with someone else on the plane that blackberry's do have that ability.

Anyone else here memorize the safety schpeal said before each flight? Joys of being a serial traveler.

How are you guys watching movies AND hearing it while in flight?
I use the headset that came with it.

You are using these with an adapter correct? I don't see a way to plug in standard earphones to the Pearl.

What adapter are you using? Do you have a link to a place where I can purchase?

I would tend to agree that one phone may not cause an issue, how about say 150 at once in a small confined area like a plane???

Just a thought, I am no expert.
