Default What am I missing; Desktop Software

Please Login to Remove!

OK, I have been using a Palm for 8 years or so. I am going to be getting a new Blackberry Pearl on Tuesday, so I am reading on how to get my Palm Desktop information over to my new Pearl. I also attempted to do this for my sister in law on her new Curve, and have the same problem.

I guess I am looking for a separate application with the Desktop software, kind of like the Palm Desktop. When I run the desktop manager, I cannot find the PIM software. I have searched these forums and have not seen anyone else with this problem, so my guess is I am missing something very simple.

I do not like to use Outlook because of the lack of being able to password protect memos, so I have been using Palm Desktop. I got the impression that Blackberry provides it's own Stand alone PIM (Desktop 4.2), and then I would just sync my Blackberry with this, and go about my business. I even read that there this program will take my data from Palm Desktop and import it into the Blackberry Desktop Software.

Where do I find the desktop software?? Is it indeed it's own stand alone product.

Thanks.

Welcome to BB Forums. There is no Palm Desktop equivalent for the BlackBerry. This actually has been asked many times (it was asked yesterday, too). There is no standalone program. Most people use Outlook.

The program to switch your data over from the Palm (not from Palm Desktop - from the Palm itself) is the Switch Device Wizard which is part of the (one and only) Desktop Manager program, which you appear to have installed.

Thanks for the prompt answer. I understand switching my data over using the switch device wizard. But what about after that. Are you saying I would have to use Outlook, or do you think I could continue using the Palm Desktop, and just continually use the switch device wizard??

Thanks again.

You cannot use Palm Desktop with BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
The BlackBerry device will not sync it's PIM with Palm Desktop at all.
You should use Outlook.

Sync your Palm once with Outlook to put all of the data into Outlook format.

Continue to sync your BB with Outlook from then on

Why the need to continue to use the Palm desktop? Unless you're on a Mac. In which case you wouldn't be using the DM

Because the Palm allows you to password protect memos. I keep all my personal information (i.e. credit card numbers, etc..) on there. There is no password protection at all on Outlook 2003.

Put them in Password Keeper on the BB

I use PGP to encrypt files on my desktop.

PGP Corporation - Products - PGP Desktop Home

Unless it's changed, you can download the trial, which includes whole disk encryption, and once the trial has expired, PGP still works for file encryption but not whole disk encryption or PGP encrypted disks. You can also send and received encrypted email with it.

This is a free encryption program reportedly very good.
