Default Procedure for a lost berry

Please Login to Remove!

Hi Guys,

I know you usually send a wipe command and then remove it from the server. But what if the device is not on? If I send a wipe and remove the device, will it still get the command to be wiped when it is turned back on?

From what I've read, that command is like a text message sent while the phone was off. The blackberry with receive it once the phone is powered back on.

The wipe command is like any other command / message; it will automatically purge from the network after 7 days.

I would highly recommend you NOT remove the user from the BES until you've confirmed a successful wipe. Lines similar to the following appear in the POLC log file:

[40000] (10/03 13:00:52):{0x974}{username@domain.com,PIN=XXXXXXXX , UserID=1}SCS::PollDBQueueNewRequests - Queuing KILL_DEVICE_REQUEST request

The above line indicates when the command was first sent and that the command is being queued for the user.

[40000] (10/03 13:01:15) :{0x960} {username@domain.com, PIN=XXXXXXXX, UserId=1}RequestHandler::HandleITADMINDataCommand - ITPolicy Success Ack for the command KILL_HANDHELD_COMMAND - Processing packet, Tag=23980295

The above line indicates when the BlackBerry device received the command and that it sent a confirmation of the receipt.

Note: To search using a string in the log file, search for ITPolicy Success Ack for the command KILL_HANDHELD_COMMAND. Once it is located, verify the user associated with the command. Search for this string when the BlackBerry device does not meet the requirements to receive the command when it is first sent.

we don't delete the user but disable his account to prevent new messages from being sent to the device... and send a wipe command, obviously

TSupport has told me it will last for 7 days as stated above...and I also agree that you shouldn't delete the BES account until you confirm the wipe has completed.

Having passwords on your devices will ease alot of the questions and stress about a phone being lost, stolen, etc.

I've always understood that if the device is deleted from the BES before the Kill Command has been verified, the Kill Command will not take effect.

Please correct me if I'm wrong...

You're wrong.

Get a device and try it yourself ... tail the contents of the POLC log and watch the HH wipe. Just make sure that the wipe command has been successfully sent before you remove the user from the BES.

Great thread, this is always a topic of controversy for us.
1. Send the wipe command
or
2. Set PW and lock handheld with a message to call a number.
Anyway, I have question about some of your comments:

Some of you spoke of deleting accts from BES. What if you re-issue a new BB to the user. Would you not send the kill command, then activate the new device to the existing account?

This is our protocol, even if the lost/stolen BB is not communicating with BES. We do have a 30 min PW lock policy on our BB's, so hopefully the lost/stolen BB is PW locked.

I've got an IT Policy with the "Wipe device if this/that happens" set to yes.

Depending who the user is depends on how quickly they get a new BB
So I assign the IT Policy, Set PW/Change User info, and lock it. Along with sending the Wipe Command.

Of course I have to remember the IT policy when the user gets his new BB lol.

Any thoughts?

Force a secure password - Encrypt the Data to the device only - Send a Wipe & Disable - Force a wipe if no Policy check in in longer than a week - Wipe if battery is about to drain. All done via IT Policy. "but am I being paranoid enough?"

I got the same thing

I hope I'm not paranoid.
