I am using Blackberry Protect on my 9780.
When i try do a backup i get the following message and the backup fails

Backup failed:
NullPointerException:
java.lang.NullPointer
Exception

Can anyone advise how to fix this please

First step is a hard reset. Have you tried that yet?

I have tried a hard reset but that does not work.
I have also realised that the gps locator is not functioning on the phone and maybe this has something to do with the problem.

I doubt the GPS issue is causing the BlackBerry Protect failure to run a backup, but the two problems may be caused by some other problem.

Other apps you are running, third-party theme if you are running one, are cause for suspicion. But here is what I would do as the next step: Delete BlackBerry Protect and do another hard reset after the BlackBerry reboots. Keep the battery out a good minute.

If you do not get any errors after deleting Protect and after the second hard reset, then install Protect and try again.

The GPS was working so that is not the problem.
I did uninstall and reinstall but did not do a hard reset in beteween.
Will try that and see.

But I am getting nowhere with this
I have tried your suggestions and they just dont work.
The first time I loaded Blackberry Protect the backup worked fine.
Since then it tries and tries but wont backup and the error message appears.
There is no IT policy involved as this is not a company phone - it is a private phone on BIS so no outside interference.
HELP??

Here is what I would do. If we had more clues we could use a scalpal instead of a sledge hammer.

First do a full backup.

I would then do a security wipe from device options and select to delete third party apps. Then, if Protect is not installed, install it and test, before you do anything else. If it works, then restore your apps.

When restoring apps, install and test one at a time if you can. If you have apps you absolutely need and cannot wait, install those, but only what you absolutely need, and then from there install and test one by one.

If you do the security wipe and still get the error, then I would wipe the device software entirely with JL_CMDER or BBSAK and start over with an OS reinstall or OS upgrade.

I read posts on another fourm that lead to a solution for my issue. If you notice the backup fails about about 98%, which is where text messages are being backed up.... That lead me to remember that earlier in the week I received two blank texts from a friend. I deleted that text string and the backup worked. You can also uncheck texts from the backup if you can't isolate the text. And finally, before reading the posts on the other fourm, I was able to backup using the BB Protect desktop app.


NO need to delete and reinstall, do a battery pull or update your OS. Simple fix.

Actually it somewhat makes a bit of sense.
Sync'ing issues with Contacts with no entry (name/number) cause havoc as well; unsure why. Based on this, if flawlessly applicable is good consideration for RIM to document.

Nice work. Good to be back from stupid Sandbox devices (iOS), and l33t junk (android) - although I may just keep my nano until quality premium stereo headsets are revised and released from RIM.

I love this Bold 9900 - common developers don't keep me hanging.

Yeah, it does seem plausible. So, another idea would be to back up one database at a time, and possibly narrow it down, if the problem is something like this and it isn't obviously a blank SMS. Wish the OP would have posted an update.
