Default Lost Curve can memory card be accessed?

Please Login to Remove!

Hey jsut curious tonight i lost my curve which is no big deal but my memory card had alot of pictures that i would NOT like falling into otheres hands.

I had encryption mode set to on on the curve for the memory card however two days ago i inserted the memory card into my computer to see if it worked and i was able to access the files without a problem.

My question is if encryption mode is set to on can someone who found the phone access the contents of the memory card?

It has a password so once the enter in the incorrect pass code 7 times it will wipe the handheld. Again i could really care less about the phone but the memory card had ALOT of pictures that im scared will fall into the wrong hands.

Encryption mode is on
mass media storage mode is on
and Content protection is on

Thanks in advance.

found this on Blackberrytips.com
What is Content Protection? - BlackBerry Tips
When you enable content protection on your BlackBerry, the BlackBerry will encrypt data that it determines to be sensitive, e.g. emails, browser cache, address book entries etc.

I think the media card is not included in the 'sensitive data' list. Your tests seem to confirm that. You can't store email or attachments on the card from the BB itself.

Im really not concerned with the emails or address book because once they entered the unlock code wrong it would wipe the hand held. Its the memory card it self that I'm curious if it can be accessed.

Anyone?

Ok.... maybe i wasn't clear, his response was in reference to content protection under the security settings.

My question is pertaining to the option under Options>Advanced options>Media Card> Encryption Mode set to on.

Ive pretty much lost hope but now its more a matter of curiosity. Why have encryption mode if you cant actually Encrypt the Micro SD

donthateme13,

I've gone ahead and done some research into this. Once you turn on encryption on your media card, pictures are encrypted and stored with a ".rem" extension on your media card. I didn't spend a lot of time checking how secure it is, but you can't view the image by just changing the file extension.

That being said, pictures taken *before* you turn on encryption on your media card are not encrypted.

Here's a screen capture from windows explorer:

My Media Card Settings are:
Media Card Support: On
Encryption Mode: Security Password & Device
Encrypt Media Files: Yes
Mass Storage Support Mode: On
Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected: No

Hope this helps!

I made some tests with BB8800 and BB storage mode.
The device setting was:

Media card support: on
encryption mode: device
encrypt media files: yes
mass storage mode support: on
auto enable mass storage mode when connected: yes

Contect protection: enabled
strenght: strong
include address book: yes

After I'm coping some doc, xls, ppt files to BB media card memory, I lock device.

After I put micro SD card in the reader I could access to xls, doc and ppt files with no problems.

Is it by design?

so now lets say you were a clever and decided to take out your memory card, slip it into ur computer, and transfer the encrypted files like that. now they're on ur computer in .jpg.rem format, so u cant open them off that, and you cant put them back on ur blackberry... what should you do? lol. ive been tryin to fix it for days now and i cant figure it out.

Unless the tips in the other thread where you posted this same question don't work, you are stuck.
