Default 9700 maps

Please Login to Remove!

I have two 9700's one is a little problematic screen wise but still works, I will get that fixed shortly, the other I just got works fine.
My problem is with the Blackberry maps.

I do not have a data plan, never have.

On the problem 9700 the mapping works fine, on the other one the icon is there but no actual map.

BB Desktop says it is loaded, I reloaded from Blackberry but still no actual map.

I did talk to my server, not very helpful, she just said to reload the operating system which I did but it didnt do any good.

I am using the same O/S in both units.

Any ideas?

You need a BB data plan for most of the map applications to work. i assume that you are trying to use BB Maps? It does require BB data. Maps are downloaded as needed and not stored on the device itself. I think Garmin makes a stand alone map app, but after paying for it, you could almost have a stand alone GPS unite, which, IMHO, is a better solution.

I don't think your correct but I may be wrong.

In those pictures you see two phones using the same sim card, one has the mapping the other no map.

In the two pictures below you can see the icon and the map.... there is no data on the plan.

It can give me a route between two points, search for places and addresses etc.

the same icon is on the other phone, it will locate me and give me the position where I am, no doubt that is the built in GPS, but it should as far as I know give me an actual map. Same plan, same sim card, same 9700 phone.

Your telling me I need a data plan, I have been told that the phone stores the maps on the phone.

When I am at home I have the map, if I travel to Toronto it places me at the correct position with the map immediately.

I do not have a data plan so how in your opinion could it work, me I havnt a clue.

Why does the same not happen on the new phone.

Puzzled

You still have not answered Dubdub's question of which map application you are using. And notice he said "You need a BB data plan for most of the map applications to work". Blackberry maps requires a data plan to work.

The actual maps have to be downloaded to the device somehow. How your first device got the maps is still in question. However, I would venture a guess that the reason the second device doesn't work is because it does not have "data" access to download the maps. You cannot just switch sim cards in BB's and have the data plan follow the sim card.

It may be one BlackBerry still has service books from previous owner and the other does not.

An alternative, of course, would be it is a mapping app that uses locally stored maps, and either the app or the data, or both, are not on the other BlackBerry.

From what OP posts, there is no data plan, period.
