I searched for this and did not find the answer...

I have a 7520. Love it. Love my Bluetooth Jaba 250, the Texas holdem game, the email and web stuff...awsome...

I see this GPS. It does not always sync, and it seems to only sync when I tell it to. Somehow it is tied to 911. Like if I call them do I have to make it sync with the satelittes so they know where I am? Or do they send a remote request to the gps to repport a status?

Can my company track me through this? I am sure they are runnin BES.

I see only MyNxtel online account list something about Tracking but I can't get into it, only the system administrator can.

Basically can BES send a remote GPS status request to the GPSs in the 7520?

The E911 system is automatic. You don't have to do a thing. Dialing 911 should automatically get the GPS to sync.

So is there a product from Nextel, or Blackberry that allows youe office to see where you are?

Our Nextel sales-guy said there was, but I've never seen it.

Nextel has quite a few products that will track/plot phone positions via GPS. We've never been interested in them just because of the whole Big Brother aspect, but I could see where it could be useful (e.g. dispatching the closest tech to a service call).

As far as I know, only 911 can access GPS on the phone, unless you are using a 3rd party application and have the settings correct for access.

Currently, RIM OS 4.0 doesn't support refreshing or forwarding the location information. Trusted word from many of Nextel's location services partners have quoted an early April target for applicatons such as CometTracker, Gearworks, Telenav/Telenavtrack and others to land on your 7520.

This being said, all of these applications require some sort of logon or clock-in. Indeed losing the convert aspect of the GPS utilization.

The only Nextel Location Service that operates covertly is Mobile Locator, which wil show the last five known locations of a device in the preferred order: AGPS, Neareast iDEN Tower. And can also ping a device in real-tim

So yes, they could be glancing at you now.....

To my understanding, only 911 can track your position WITHOUT permission, and that is only if you call. Other programs such as telenav and mobile locator require the user to grant permission for the unit to be tracked. I'm 99% sure that's how it works on the phones, so I don't see why it would be much different for a blackberry.

Permission must be granted, but can be set to auto-allow for different applications. It would be an extreme inconvienence if the end user had to click allow every time the gps data was polled.

Very good point. I haven't messed with the GPS much at all on my phone, so I don't know the ends and outs of it yet, but that does make a lot of sense to auto-allow.
