Default BB8700 Convenience Keys

Please Login to Remove!

I had one of the first 8700 devices in the UK on T-Mobile, and this allowed me to set either of the convenience keys to "Contacts".

I have just had a warranty exchange, and this has the latest version of the software (.286). However, the option to set the convenience keys to "contacts" has been removed. I guess my orignal 8700 had the .224 software installed.

I escaleted this to T-Mobile tech support, and was told that RIM have removed this function and do not intend to put it back. Removing functionality for no reason is just *crazy*. I like my convenience keys set to Messages & Contacts. There is no other way to get to Contacts quickly - pressing the send key doesn cut it as can only call a contact from there and not email/sms/pin...

The release notes don't mention this.

My question is WHY? Why have RIM removed functionality? What logic? Is it a mistake? If anyone from RIM is lurking here, pls respond, if only "unofficially", as this is just plain stupid IMHO.

Anyone else shed some light on this?

Thx

The only thing I can add is that I'm using an unlocked 8700c with the Telestra Handset OS (on T-Mobile's network), and my convenience key functions options remain intact. My front/center button is set to "contacts", and my left side convenience key is set to "lock" the keypad.

i'm on 284 for my 8700r and the convenience keys are still there for me. left side is OPTIONS and center one is LOCK for me. if they removed the ability to customize this in the newer versions then that's just stupid!

no, he's saying that they removed the "contacts" option from the convience key customization list.

I recently upgraded to .284 and my side convenience key was still accessing 'contacts' even though it showed that it was set to 'nothing' under the screen/keyboard menu. After reading the thread I went and changed it without realizing that there was no option for 'contacts' anymore. Why would RIM remove functionality?!!!

Why bother setting it to Contacts - Try Address Book, or better yet turn Dial from Home Screen off in Phone options and use the letter key "A" to access the Address book.

Thanks for the tip Stinsonddog. Contact and address book are not available to me for either convenience key. Did what you suggested and my bberry is almost the way it was before the software upgrade

Wirelessly posted (Thumpers 8700c: BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

Interesting, I'm on Telstra and I don't have the contacts option (or address book). I don't need it, but it's curious as to why some versions would have it and others don't.

The othe option is from the message app menu, select Compose PIN or Compose Email and just start typing the name in the TO; field. It works just like when you Press and hold the Phone Key for phone calls.

Hope this helps.

Because you cant do this if you are embedded in another application. Thats the whole point of a convenience key !

Contacts and address book are both the same thing.

I like to use the convenience key as a shortcut to take me directly to contacts. Its just RIM in their wisdom have removed functionality which is not documented in their release notes, and there is no logical justification for them having done so. That SUCKS !

sorry, I misunderstood. I did read that, but pressing != holding, which is necessary to go to the address book. I only use that when I am going to make a phone call, so I suppose I never noticed that the only thing you *can* do from there is call.
