Hi, I have the following situation, any suggestions will be highly appreciated

we have a office in Bejing and the users in that office want to email in chinese instead of english. we buy all our devices in U.S. and ship it out to our offices in Bejing. the problem is that t-mobile USA does not seem to support double-byte characters on any of there devices (even though they claim to support it) I had numerous rounds with t-mobile and RIM both keep blaming the other. I know that hucthson supports chinese characters in china for all there devices. I tried downloading software from asia pacific site but no use. I have a 7290 device that i need to configure with chinese character support. can you someone help?

Hi, try this:

1. Go to

and download the Chinese 7290 software version 4.0.2.35, details of this file:
Package Version: 4.0.2.49
Consisting of:
Applications: 4.0.2.35
Software Platform: 1.8.0.138
Kernel V3.8.0.27

2. Install this software on your PC, delete the vendor.xml in \Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader folder;

3. Run Blackberry desktop and upgrade your 7290, only install the part for Chinese Support!!!!

Have you figured out a solution? Did raypower's suggestion work? I tried it once with my BB 7230, but the problem was I can only compose in Chinese, but I cannot read in Chinese.

Just an update. Raypower's suggestion works perfectly for me. After the upgrade, I was able to READ and Compose in Chinese.

I download it from CSL. But I guess the link from Raypower's post should be the same.

It's such a wonderful feeling to be able use in Blackberry in Chinese. I am in China now and it saved me from buying another phone here.

When installing software, do not forget to delete the vendor.xml file. There is no chinese support in T-Mobile software, therefore you must use foreign software. Foreign BlackBerryOS software will not work unless you delete the vendor.xml file.

After that, chinese characters will work.
(as long as you install BlackBerryOS software for the same model - i.e. 7290)

Is there a list of sites where I can download foreign software? I am interested in an OS that will support Thai and/or Chinese. Thanks for your help!

You'll have to do a little digging to find one, but start here:

Start with the obvious carriers that always have Chinese (3, HK CSL, Telstra, etc.) and see if you find one; make sure to look at the actual version numbers and shoot for either the same version you already have, or one newer. You don't want to go backwards unless absolutely necessary!

So for instance I went to Telstra right now, chose a 7290 and see this:

I don't have a 7290 so have not tried this, but from what I understand all BlackBerrys upgrade/downgrade the same way.

Quick related question-- I live in Hong Kong, got an unlocked (CSL) Blackberry 8800 here to use with my Smartone-Vodafone carrier (because Smartone only sells locked BBs), and it SHOULD have total Chinese text support. In fact, it looks like it does, but when I tried to input a very basic message to email to my friend (like, "Ni hao ma"-- I am only learning Hanzi, not good yet), it looked fine until I hit SEND, and then all the characters turned to question marks "?????". Any idea why this is? Did it actually send the proper characters, and my device somehow can't save them? Or did I send jibberish to begin with? Any solutions?

Interesting! Well, you have *input* support, meaning you can read and type it on your phone. That part makes total sense and seems to be working.

Now, I don't know about SmartTone, but I just did a fast Google and found that Singtel has 'Chinese SMS' as an actual value added service; it makes sense from a technical standpoint, as 'chinese' (pinyin, kanji, korean, etc. characters) use two bytes per character instead of 1, like in romanji (western english, etc.). It might be possible that you have to get some sort of special service added to your account.

I did a quick search on the Smart/Voda website (& Google) and they don't even say a single thing about Chinese SMS anywhere. Is it possible their network doesn't support it?
