Thanks for a great guide - I found this thread while trying to configure the chat scripts. I have a different problem - any help much appreciated.

The connection script works for me, and I get assigned a dns server and local IP. If I open Firefox, my google homepage loads ok, although it looks odd - the bottom of the screen says something like "transferring data from 1.2.3.4" - the IP is something just like that.

Anyway, I can then maybe do one google search, but then I seem to lose the connection. The script is still running ok in the background, but it's as if I lose any lookup ability.

Not sure if this is related, but about the time I lose the connection, a directory browser window for my BB appears, as if the BB has just been connected to the laptop.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Edit: I'm on the most up to date version of Xubuntu - 8.10(?)

Just to add a little more to the above - I seem to get a connection for about 30 seconds. I know ping is meant to be unreliable with barry, but I can ping a server by domain name (so dns is working fine), and the ping eventually times out after about 30 secs or so - coincidentally at exactly the same time as the BB browser dialog appears - so it seems that the BB is unmounting and remounting or something.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated - I'm heading back to a hotel on Monday so would really like this up and running by then

That is definitely odd. My laptop doesn't mount and demount a lot like yours. Hey does your device automatically allow media access? Mine doesn't and I usually select "no" when using it as modem.

Hi Iare,

I'm not sure I understand correctly, but my BB media setting was set to automatically mount when connected, so I changed that setting to "no". I don't have the problem with the file browser appearing any more, but the connection still dies after about 30 seconds.

I've tried ping and tracepath to rule out a dns issue, and neither work past that point, so the connection is definitely dying. I think it must be either a setting on my BB, or something wrong with the chatscript.

All I've done on the chat script is change the barry-tmobileus script to add in the IP and the other thing (ARP?) that T-Mobile gave me.

I did think looking at all the chatscripts that are posted online that I could get away with removing the IP and leaving it as "IP" - funny, I still get connected that way, but have no dns, so I guess the IP they gave me is for the primary dns server.

Wirelessly posted

In my case it connects but doesn't allow data transfer for some reason.

Strange. Maybe try asking that question in Barry website? I don't know enough for that kind of problem. :(

titetanium it may be due to your service agreement, does it include using phone as modem and a data plan?

I've been struggling with my Bold lately on Ubuntu and FC10. I can connect, but I get no IP address and then I get disconnected. If anyone has had success with Barry/Bold on Ubuntu, please share your peer and chat files.

It always seems that the minute you post a question, you start fiddling...

As it turned out, the novj option in the AT&T peer file provided with barry-0.15 was causing the provider to not give my BB an IP address.

Go figure...

Default Success!

Finally, it's working but its slow. At least I don't have to switch out to windows much anymore except for upgrading the OS on my blackberry.

If you have problems with barry you can also try the opensource program i wrote for tethering a blackberry (USB), it'd been tested by multiple people on both Linux and Mac succesfully.

Smile Using my BB as a modem for my laptop

I'm new to this Blackberry thing and I'm trying to use it as a modem for my laptop. I have the instructions, however I'm stuck on the internet APN (Alltel). I called Alltel and they told me they do not have to give me that information. I was wondering if anyone else has Alltel and if they may have this internet APN (for USA). I don't really want to pay them $30 a month for this service. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

Try How To: Connect PC to the Internet using a CDMA or UMTS BlackBerry as tethered modem - PinStack.com

Its for windows, but should have similar information necessary for this setup too.

Good luck.
