Bloomberg: IBM wants RIMxxx039;s crown jewel -- its enterprise business | Mobile Technology - InfoWorld

IBM has shown interest in acquiring the vital enterprise services business of struggling smartphone maker Research in Motion, according to a Bloomberg report on Friday.

The report cites two unnamed sources, including one person who said IBM has informally approached RIM about buying the unit. The unit is valued at at around $2 billion, industry experts say.

Officials from IBM and RIM declined to comment on the report.

However, one person with knowledge of the situation told Computerworld today that the report "not true."

The RIM unit includes BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) support and related software functions. The deal could also include RIM's NOC (network operations center).

Thet operation also supports servers used to provide secure Internet connections for millions of RIM users. Many of those users work at large banks and financial services firms that have come to rely on BES for high-level security in email transmissions from and to mobile devices.

RIM says that about 250,000 BES servers, and about 78 million BlackBerry devices, are used at workplaces around the world.

The enterprise services business is widely considered RIM's crown jewel, even as the former smartphone leader has struggled since the introduction of the iPhone five years ago to produce smartphones attractive to consumers.

The unveiling of smartphones running RIM's BlackBerry 10 operating system have been delayed over the past year and are expected to launch early in 2013.

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins has in recent weeks been conducting a strategic review at RIM amid layoffs of about one-third of the company's work force. Heins has said that RIM may license the BlackBerry OS to third parties, but has not specifically talked of selling off the enterprise business unit or the NOC.

RIM's NOC transmits all BlackBerry data for both enterprises and consumers.

Any deal to buy RIM's enterprises services businesses would have to include an agreement on whether RIM would retain control over part or all of the NOC, including consumer-related traffic, analysts said.

Ken Dulaney, an analyst at Gartner, said an IBM acquisition of RIM's enterprise unit "would make a lot of sense to me. Customers would love knowing that an IBM is behind this."

Still, he said RIM probably wouldn't sell the unit, considering that the company has some $2.2 billion in cash and no debt, and wouldn't want to give up such a vital asset.

"RIM might give up just the NOC and keep the BES servers that go on-premise with customers," Dulaney added.

Jack Gold, an analyst at J. Gold Associates, said the enterprise services business is "very profitable for RIM, so why would they want to sell it?"

Still, Gold said IBM would like RIM's software technology, to add into its own WebSphere software and perhaps even into Notes. "IBM is behind on mobile and this software would give them a boost," he said.

Both Dulaney and Gold had cast doubt on a Jefferies financial analyst's report this week that said Samsung has considered buying RIM or licensing its BB10 OS.

Heins is expected to update investors on the RIM strategic review at the next earnings call on Sept. 27.

Ken Dulaney has been advocating a breakup of RIM for years. Services vs. Hardware.

BTW - I don't put any stock in this as it was an "informal discussion". It drove the stock up Friday. Back down today.

Dateline USA..............
All these rumors. Someone at ATT said that they sent back Blackberry due to lack of sales. It seems the younger crowd likes the iphone and Android os. better for their use. Could it be the unemployment rate figures into this equation? In my opinion, Blackberrys are the best for business use. Messages, EMail, and internet relating to business. With the unemployment rate at over 8%,(approximately 23 Million people) out of work.
Hopefully, our economy will turn around, and we will see more BB sales in the near future.

Stock is currently at $6.66/share, down from a 52 week high of $32.48, and from a 5 year high of over $140.

RIM had 4.8% of smartphone sales in the latest quarter (per published IDC reports), down from $11.4% in the prior year.
PlayBook had less than 1% of tablet sales

Those aren't rumors. And that's not because of the economy.

It all comes down to BB 10.

IMHO

If RIM thinks its phones will survive if they sell the server business to IBM someone better wake up.
IBM will offer continued prices for just about as long as it takes the sun to set. I work for a company that use IBM for various services and in the beginning they would do the work with their employees. Today they have outsourced just about everything and the cost is off the wall. Once they get control the cost will escalate. This if anything will drive business to another device. Yes Blackberry is a great business phone but at some point the cost to use will be taken into account. Yes its all business but at this point RIM has bad management and one could hope their not thinking about dumping the business.

This would be a great asset for IBM if ever the news turned out to be true. There really is a technology struggle with the technology giants of today. Every one of them wants to nab the best technology available for their company's interests. Why don't they make their own revolutionary technology then?
