Angry BES 5 migration to new hardware with SBE CALs

Please Login to Remove!

How does one migrate an upgraded BES 5.0.2 (used to be SBE, but now has trade up key) to a new server running Server 2008 OS?

Turns out BES 5.0.1+ wont accept SBE CALs, so its not possible to use the trade up key to upgrade them on a fresh install. (This is by design according to RIM)

Has anyone else come across this scenario.

I had this issue a month ago and RIM (after much talk) replaced the SBE CALs for Enterprise ones. But now im dealing with another advisor and hes not budging. Keeps advising me to do an inplace upgrade then migrate. HOW DO I MIGRATE using the CALs I currently have??

thanks in advance!!

Still not having any luck with this. tried following http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB12304
Moving database to new server or remote first, get the new BES to look/upgrade the old database during install, for the sake of CALs and move users between the 2 BESs.

Now the old BES wont accept the upgraded database, the new BES won't allow login with an error:
Login failed, please contact your administrator

BAS logs show:
com.rim.bes.bas.licensemanager.UnsupportedNumberOf UsersForSMELicenseKeyException: Message: 'validateAddLicenseKey Failed to construct a master key, com.rim.bes.bas.licensemanagertools.LicenseManager JNIException: BAS LicenseManager exception occurred in function: JLicenseManager::constructNewMasterKey, Error: -10 - SME seat limit exceeded', nested exception: 'BAS LicenseManager exception occurred in function: JLicenseManager::constructNewMasterKey, Error: -10 - SME seat limit exceeded'

Found this:
KB17187-After an update from BlackBerry Professional Software to BlackBerry Enterprise Server, administrators are not able to add new licenses or log into the BlackBerry Administration Service

Going back to RIM

There have been a few posts about the SBE CALs and the free BPS ones.

Since none of us can change a CAL, you will have to call RIM.

Thanks knottyrope

since RIM wont change the CALs, what are my options to successfully migrate BES 5.0.2 to new hardware without re-entering SBE CALs and Trade-up key on the new server install?

Does the database hold this info? Perhaps I should migrate the database to the new server and point the BES to it during install.

Have you tried to install the Server as a time limited Demo, and then, restoring the database from a backup of your previous installation ?

Its a Full BES 5.0.2 but with SBE CALs and trade up key.
has 30 SBE CALs and 5 enterprise CALs from the trade up key.
Total 30 active users on BES.

that is more than I thought you would have.

IIRC you can only have 15 SBE CALs loaded on BES 5 from an upgrade.

Talking Re: BES 5 migration to new hardware with SBE CALs

RIM finally replaced the CALs and pointed me to this KB:
KB17187-After an update from BlackBerry Professional Software to BlackBerry Enterprise Server, administrators are not able to add new licenses or log into the BlackBerry Administration Service

In the future, they want proof of the failed install, by being sent the logs as shown in the KB.

My problem with that is, if you know its not going to work (cos you have over 15 SBE CALs), why would an admin bother trying to upgrade, interrupting a working BES and leave it in a state where its not working, just to get the error in the logs?
Anyways, got my CALs.

Thanks for the help guys!!
