Hi all!
This is my very first post about my very first blackberry (my 9700 which I ABSOLUTELY love!).

So basically I've been doing some research without any answers to my specific questions.

I have a blackberry data service I've been using without difficulty for 2 weeks now. I've read that blackberry data services can be used over wifi and I tried to test it out by turning off my mobile network and connecting to my wifi network at home. It turns white and I can access facebook app, internet, blackberry push email and can reply easily but for some reason when I send messages via BBM I get a checkmark but no 'd'. I realise that this means that it has not been delivered to the recipient and was wondering why this is the case since everything else seems to be working fine.

I'm mainly testing this out to see if I can do the same overseas

but that doesn't really answer the question and there for doesn't help him. it SHOULD work properly. i have seen issues where i wont get a delivery confirmation even when using the cell network. it could be a glitch on RIM's end and it just so happened to glitch when you where using the wifi only. i would say test it again at a later time. and just FYI, a battery pull will almost ALWAYS be your first trouble shooting step with almost any problem you may have with your Blackberry. welcome to the forums. you are now trapped into the addictive world of Blackberry!!

BBM sends PIN to PIN. Make sure you have a UMA just above the WiFI or you're not connected to blackberry's servers.

I have the same query. How do I know that I am connected via WiFi?
GPRS area with WiFi the browser is very fast so I suspect it is using the Wifi.

Mines still says UMA. I can turn off the phone transmitter and just leave the WiFi on and can still use UMA.

you know your connected to wifi if the wifi icon is bright white and not shaded. uma is for voice over wifi. not data. the bright white wifi means your connected to blackberry. the uma icon is NOT an indicator of being connected to blackberry. most of us dont even have uma, and it is irrelevant to the topic anyways

you must not have UMA, or you would know its not only for voice. UMA takes all incoming and outgoing connections whether its voice or data including BIS/BES and sends them through the internet. this can easily be seen in services status under manage connections, but obviously only if you have tmobile. i wouldnt think tmobile would spend money on it if it only was used for voice. that would be pretty useless.

No UMA icon is displayed. Whether the WiFi icon is white or grey is difficult to see but according to diags WiFi is connected but not to the BB service. No doubt this is why there is no tick next to the WiFi connections status.

no i dont have UMA. im on ATT. so if you have a UMA enabled device, do you
NOT have a WiFi icon?? i have only heard of UMA in regards to voice. i didnt realize it handles data traffic also.
