Disregard the fact that the screen shows "insert sim card" Both the outside show "CDMA BY QUALCOM" and there is a Qualcom chip in there...

It's a good question, but Verizon does currently have Hybrid CDMA/GSM blends...So maybe the new CDMA 87xx series will be a HYBRID or CDMA/GSM

Qualcomm makes the chipset for the UMTS devices, so perhaps that's your confusion?

False start, though. No CDMA 8700 device in those links. Just the UMTS 8707 device.

UMM, No look at the External shot of battery cover, it says "CDMA BY QUALCOM"

I don't know ...

It could be the guts of a CDMA test unit inside of a Vodafone casing that was on hand and accessible during assembly ...

The thing that makes me skeptical is that, on the screen shot, the device is showing the message "Insert SIM Card".

Plus, why bother etching "CDMA BY QUALCOM" into the battery cover if you're going to leave the Vodafone logo on the front ... it's an odd inconsistency ...

Isn't UMTS an evolution of CDMA? Its called W-CDMA for a reason...

And yeah, these look like 8707v disassembly pics. 8707v's have SIM cards too, since they're both 2.5G and 3G, right?

Except there's no Intel chip in there, and there IS a Qualcomm chip...which makes it a 8707, not an 8700 device.

W-CDMA / UMTS / HSDPA / HSUPA is allied with GSM, is the evolution of the GSM carriers around the world.

CDMA2000 / 1xRTT / 1xEV-DO is the evolution of CDMA, and goes with the CDMA carriers around the world, namely Korea, Canada, and the US.

The GSM evolution is actually switching how they transfer information over the air. It's not going to be a TDMA only technology, but a CDMA technology, and some phones will use the QUALCOMM chip. It will still use the SIM Card technology. You can read up about it at wikipedia.org

Technically, it's going to be a dual-mode phone, that switches from HSDPA to GSM when you move out of the area. I've heard that they were trying to fix the problems of going from GSM -> HSDPA and getting the bounce back UP to the highspeeds.
