Default BES EA Activation problems

Please Login to Remove!

This is a new exchange server with BES Express installed.

mail is flowing fine to and from exchange/outlook. When activating any BB (these have all worked on previous BES servers) it will say Activating [email address] and hang there.

I've wiped the BBs and tried again. Reset the EA password as well.

Event manager:
1. {Joe Smith} Unable to save configuration settings or statistics
2. User Joe Smith not started
3. {joe.smith@joe.com} MAPIMailbox::CreateSearchFolder - Open folder failed (0x80070005) failed

I'm not an expert here - just testing BES out.

After an extended period of time it says The server is not responding. Please contact your sys admin.

From the short description it looks like you are having users that are not starting and it looks like we can't access the mailboxes.

From the command prompt, go into C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Utility and run the utility called IEMStest. Select your users and see if you see successes or failures.

0x80070005 <-- Permissions error.

So it failed.

Go into the Exchange System Manager, expand servers, right click on your Exchange Server, go to Properties, Security, and then make sure these three are checked off:
- administer information store
- receive as
- send as

Check the mailbox store level as well.

Also make sure the besadmin has delegate control over your Exchange Servers with the Exchange View Only Administrator permission.

try wiping the device twice (wipe, wipe) and reactivate again and see. Iam not sure whay it requires a 2nd wipe but seems to resolve the issue, at least for me.

Default Simlar yet maybe different?

I'm having a similar problem activating our one company Blackberry on a single user version of BES. The device just sits forever saying activating. After 1/2 hour or so, it comes back with server not responding

I'm getting different results from IEMtest though,

C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Utility>IEMSTest.exe
BlackBerry Enterprise Server Utility - IEMSTest.exe (IExchangeManageStore), Version 1.0
Copyright (c) Research In Motion, Ltd. 1999. All rights reserved.
Opening Default Message Store Mailbox - BESAdmin.
No addresses returned.

Does this also imply Exchange Permissions? They seem to be correct per the other link.

I do the following if I am uncertain about Wireless activations.
Provision via USB cable and allow the Activation to complete cabled.
Once complete, test all the functionality, Email flow to and from BB, calendaring, etc. If all of that post cable activation is fine then it is either something like a Mail Filter affecting the Activation Email flow or the Activation email is being moved or deleted before it can be picked up. I have had instances of Users deleting or opening th activation email before it gets picked up. I always check rights and permissions as a rule in these cases to Rule out permission problems.

You should explicitly trust the following domains on any Mail Filter you are using, its where the Activations Emails come from.

@etp03.etp.{eu}.blackberry.net
@etp04.etp.{eu}.blackberry.net
@etp05.etp.{eu}.blackberry.net

Where {eu} maybe your region.

Very good point Gareth, this biggest problem with wireless activation is that the 'activation' email never gets to the user's Inbox. I would definitely check for filters on the mail client. If the email does not reach and reside in the Inbox the activation will not be successful. The email should have an attachment that contains the PIN information for the device.

Make sure that .dat attachments aren't being dropped from the email as well.

A great way to check this and to ensure the users mailbox is getting the activation email is to actually remove the User from the BES, then try to do an OTA EA from the device. You should get the etp email with a .dat attachment in the users inbox and it'll stay there unless deleted by user, moved by a rule, or picked up by spam filter.

Sometimes when I have OTA EA issues I will restart the dispatcher service and wait about 30 minutes and it'll work. *Warning this will cause a delay in mail delivery to the device as a mailbox rescan will occur for BES users*
