I'm a bit puzzled by the wifi mount of the storage on my laptop. Sometimes it just appears by itself and other times it doesn't show up as connected even though both the laptop and z10 are on the same wifi and blackberry link is running. Is there some way to initiate it from the phone or some router configuration required?

As long as you're on the same network/ subnet as the desktop hosting BB Link, it will appear if you have enabled the feature on the device and in BB Link.

It doesn't seem to do it consistently. What discovery protocol is it using? It would also be nice if I could hook it into my work desktop where the wifi is on a different subnet.

It won't because it's technically not the same network as far as the Z10 sees it. Our office does the same, where the WLAN subnet is different from the wired LAN.
