Default New to BB - need help w/BES

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All,

I'm new to Blackberry. I appreciate all of the info on this forum and am hoping someone can help me with my issue.

I was with Verizon and had several different Treos. After all of the issues dealing with wireless sync, bluetooth & the constant resets, I decided to switch to a Blackberry 8800 w/Cingular.

I need help on how to set up the BES. I use Outlook 2003 for my emailing, calendar and contacts. I was told that in order to have my BB sync wirelessly with outlook email, calendar & contacts, I would need to get the BES software with a license. So I downloaded the BES software from RIM (free for a single user license), but I suspect I downloaded the wrong version. I downloaded the MS Exchange version. I do not use MS Exchange, but only use MS Outlook. When I tried installing BES, it stalled at a certain point b/c I do not have MS Exchange.

Can someone please tell me what I need to do (either with respect to which BES version to redownload) or what I need to do to get the BB up and running (wirelessly syncing) with my outlook program?

Thank you in advance,

RW

Moving to BES Admin corner - you may have more luck over here.

Your Cingular rep has you on the wrong track...BES, BlackBerry Enterprise Server is only for companies running Microsoft Exchange (or Lotus Domino or Groupwise) mail servers internally for their employees.

For individuals, you need to use BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service), more information can be found here
BlackBerry - BlackBerry Internet Service | Mobile Email, Browser, Instant Messaging Service & Support

Alternately, I believe you can use BlackBerry Desktop Manager to redirect e-mails, but that would force you to leave your computer on and running to receive and relay the messages as they drop into Outlook.

(Edited to add the disclaimer that as a BES admin, I'm not familiar with nor have tried BIS or Desktop Redirection)

When we got our first 8703e to test I used the Desktop Redirection software. You will have to leave your computer on and there is a delay on syncing. It will not sync your Address Book, Calandar, or tasks, that will have to be done with the BB Desktop Manager and the USB cable. If you want everything in your Outlook to sync with the phone you will need BIS or BES.

No, if you want Everything in outlook to sync, you have to use BES. BIS will sync your e-mail only. You always have the option of hosted BES or you can manually sync your device for calendar and contacts.

In this case i think Hosted BES is the way to go. Outsource everything.
Let someone else worry about the servers, backups, uptime, upgrades, anti-virus etc...

For those of you that are already running your own Exchange Server and are interested we started a new thread here about a different kind of hosted BES solution..
