The sound is the best thing about the curve, lol. I wouldn't dial w/o it.

I did a simple test to confirm that what we're hearing is, apparently, a string of "fake" DTMF tones - you can do this easily too. I created a temporary entry in my phone book, and gave it a phone number = 111-111-1111. I then assigned it to a speed dial key.

If the sound we hear during speed dialing were true DTMF tones, when dialing this number, all the tones would be identical. I tried it, and as reported earlier in the thread, the audible sequence is the same for this phone number as it is for all my other numbers -- even if I couldn't swear that the sequence were the exact same as I hear with other numbers, the tones vary through the sequence, meaning that they do NOT represent 111-111-1111.

I think it safe to conclude that this is a fake DTMF string that the Blackberry plays to let us know it's speed-dialing, and it's always the same audible string, regardless of what the device is actually sending down the line to our wireless carriers.

Oh well...I actually like the sound, and still get a kick out of it - reminds me of the days long ago when a friend and I were researching DTMF, blue-boxes, and the like. It's a shame they do it this way though - I'd enjoy hearing the difference between different phone number DTMF tone sequences.
