I have to agree. I always felt the biggest Opportunity For Improvement involved the browser.

I hate to say this, but I've learned not to expect too much from RIM when it comes to updates. From a realistic point of view, they have never offered anything revolutionary when it comes to OS updates for as long as I can remember.

I'd consider HTML email (granted it isn't perfect yet) and Docs To Go is a pretty decent step in the right direction...

As far as what devices we will see 5.0 on, I would hope the 8xxx devices.. Of course by the time we see OS 5, I will probably have a different BlackBerry... And I give it at least a year and half before we start seeing OS 5.

RIM needs to get it out quicker then that if it wants to stay competitive with the other platforms.

Well if they release OS 5 for the 8xxx series won't we get the improvements from 4.6 threw 5.0, ie. bedside mode, the precision themes, and so forth?

There's got to be more then what they are saying, escpecially sinc OS 5 is going to be ways off.

You would hope. I have learned not to expect too much from RIM. They take baby steps.

From what I can tell, new OS's, especially a while new version of 5.0 will bring new devices. Depending on the release date, its hard to say what devices can run it.

Look at 4.5 for example. My curve came with 4.2, the upgrade to 4.5 made it lag. I assume that is due to lack of resources (be it processor or whatever). Older generations (i.e. two generations ago, 7xxx series) can't even run 4.5.

So I can only assume that if there is anything new that comes out between now and 5.0 (4.8 or 4.9, or new devices), the current devices won't be able to run it; that includes the Curve (Javelin), Storm and the Bold.

OS 5.0 is going to be for the 83xx devices at least. Probably the 88xx and the 8110,8120, and 8130 devices as well. It has many of the same features as 4.6 but adds in enhancements for BES 5.0 as well.

On the flip side we might have to wait another BIS upgrade, after all HTML was an addition feature for BIS 2.5 so just go with RIM's numbering scheme, OS 5.0 will work better with BES 5.0, and with BIS 3.0... Any takers?

I'm not due for another upgrade till next August so hopefully that is long enough for CDMA carriers to get new devices .

And I frankly think baby steps is the way to go. GPS and Wi-Fi are great features to have, but a phone that does what it does reliably is better.

To be frank, RIM gets the OS's out fairly quickly. It's the carriers that drag their feet. I think it's safe to say that RIM has been frustrated with how long it has taken to get carriers to release updates. I know this was the case with the Storm release.
