If you don't have a data plan, then your BB won't be able to connect to the data network, even accidentally.

FYI - If you don't have a data plan, I do not believe you will get the service books necessary to use the BB browser either. You would have to use a 3rd party browser such as Opera Mini.

You will see your network coverage indicator in the upper right. As long as it says GSM, gprs, or edge, then you will not have data service. If it goes to GPRS, EDGE, or 3G (notice the capital letters) then you will have data service. You can't get the capital letters unless you have a data plan.

Correct!

not to sound rude, and assuming that you paid for the BOLD, but why would you want a BB and NOT have the data package? INET wont work, no email, no GPS..

Incorrect...if you don't take the Data Plan on AT&T they automatically put you on Pay Per Use data. You don't have Push email but you can access the net and download things OTA without plan.

Not if you say NO. They won't put you on it then, and you won't be able to rack up data charges.

Sorry, I didn't put that down. It means that you are in an area that has 3G coverage, but because you don't have a data plan, it stays lower case and you can't access any data services.

If they say they are going to put you on a pay per use data plan, you can tell them NO.

I'm thinking about purchasing a Bold, but want to know about the wi-fi. So it is definitively true that Wi-Fi can be used even without a data plan? There are so many conflicting reports about it working or not, that it would be nice to know for sure if it is possible. Also, as for the original question, how can it be guaranteed to use Wi-Fi instead of AT&T data, while still being on pay-per-use just in case it's needed? Is it just a matter of switching to Wi-Fi browser and then there's no worry? And what about something like the Google Application, or their maps. Is there a way to guarantee they dont touch the cellular data?

Thanks

You could also go to Options -> Mobile Network and turn Data Services Off
