Hmm... sounds like me with PC's when I was young & less wise. I used to tinker with my home-built PC's constantly, putting in the latest & greatest bits & pieces, overclocking them for a bit more performance after adding bigger heatsinks & more fans, upgrading immediately to the new O/S. etc. I never had a configuration that lasted more than a few months without being changed/upgraded/whatever.

As I've gotten older, I've come to the point of appreciating the computer as an efficiency tool, and one that I want to just be there and reliable when I need it to make my life easier. Much the way I think of my smartphone. I've been with AT&T --> Cingular --> AT&T for over a decade now - not because I'm convinced that they're better than another carrier, but because where I live, work, and for the huge majority of my business and personal travels, I've had great reception. I've been with them long enough that I can get a free or nearly-free upgrade every year instead of every 2 years.

Why would I pay $500 for a new phone, when I can get one free, and I'm virtually certain to be with the carrier for the term of the contract extension whether I take the free phone or not???

Of course, I could engage in your tactic of calling those who pay such huge $$$ for their phones on a regular basis to avoid contracts "idiots", but I guess age & maturity have also taught me that's not very intelligent or productive either.
