The biggest differences are the overall size, and the screen. The 77xx modles are slightly larger, have a much larger display and a much better backlight. The 72xx are slightly smaller - which tends to be the preferred form factor. It tends to come down to personal preferences. I use the 7230, but wish I had a 7730, as I like graphics and display based applications. FWIW, a couple of new models are due out by year end.

Hope this helps.

Ian

Personally, I didn't find the extra screensize of the 7730 worth the increase in form factor, the backlight is noticeably better, but it obviously harms battery life and you also end up using it a lot more since its presence makes the screen quite a bit darker than that of the 7230.

One other disadvantage that may not be an issue to you is the non-standard connector of the 7730, the 7230 uses a standard usb cable that also works fine on my camera and mp3 player so thats 2 less cables i need to carry around.

I actually like the new BB 7780 form it is bigger but thinner and the enhanced backlit has made it worth the move. I do agree that the USB connect at the bottom of the 7780 is a drag and requires my wife and I to use different USB cables for syncing as the 7280 has a different USB port.

Is there any chance you can try both of them out in a shop, as you can see both devices have their advocates and until you try them you can't be sure which one you will prefer to carry round, use as a phone etc.

Mind you, if you do decide on the 72xx form factor then you have the issue of whether you wait a bit longer for the 7290 to show up.

The 77xx series is much more worth it! Its got a crisper display due to the backlight.

I would definately go with the 7780..

(I have a 7750..)

I found the backlight made the screen worse than that of the 72xx when they were both unlit, its noticeably darker and you are forced into using the backlight a lot more often.

The new screen really is the selling feature of the 7780 over the 7280 plus its the only BB with backlit ajustments which is a nice feature.

The camera sucks. It's a very poor resolution.

And the screen is equally poor in terms of resolution. Photos are blurry due to the 160x160 display (I think that's the resolution).

The treo is a reasonable toy, but the keyboard is a bit nasty and that camera isn't much better either.

Oh, and also regarding the treo, from what I hear.. the design and build quality is horrid, and you WILL go through several units.

I lloked at a Treo 600 before I got my 7780. THe 600's keyboard is really really small. The 600 generaly had a cheap feel to it.

For outdoor use in all kinds of weather, the 7280 has a better screen than the 7780.

That's because when the backlight is turned off, the 7280 screen is better than the 7780 screen. The 7280 is a better outdoor unit.

However, for indoor use especially in darker environments, the 7780 is much better looking. The 7780 is a better indoor unit.

Decide on your pattern of usage -- outdoor versus indoor.
