Say I buy a couple of 72xx devices now for two of our lawyers, and that the new 7290's come out with the some carrier a few months later. How difficult will it be to upgrade these two lawyers with the new devices and still use the "old" 72xx's for other lucky members of the staff?
If the devices are with the same carrier its a matter of backing up the data swapping the SIM cards from the old to the new and restoring the info or simply sync the new devices with Outlook, Notes etc. If your BWC users you'll need to update the PIN and IMEI info in the BWC as well for messages to take effect forwarding to the new units.
As for the old the new users will require a service plan so they can be used. All they'll really need is to have the info cleared from the previous user. Their are multiple way to do that 1. the Java loader from the BB site 2. The advanced feature within Back up/Restore in the Desktop Manger 3. Simply set a pass for the BB enter incorrectly 10 times and that will clear the device as well.
If you are using BES do you need to do anything on the server? If I just sync my new device will it just update the BES server automatically??? Thanks.
I don't know about BES, but I just performed a device swap today, switching the SIM cards, and the only thing different (aside from a brand new 6230) was the PIN# and IMEI# that I noticed. If BES uses PIN# you might have to update that.
I know you definitely need the PIN set for BES. I was hoping based on logining into BES that it would ask you if you want to associate the new device with your email/bes account.
Ah, I guess notifylink is the Novell Groupwise version of BES. The problem is I don't have access to the BES server to change the PIN myself and technically I am probably not supposed to buy my own bluetooth blackberry and hook it up at work. Can't justify the company to pay for a new one either...
Not really an alternative to bes. Just a third party email system. It no where near matches the capabilities of bes.
But yes. Without access to your bes, I doubt you\'ll be able to switch models.

As long as you select yes when the desktop software asks you do you want to switch devices then it will get updated fine. I have used every uk model since the 5820 and haven't had any problems at all with changing devices.
cool. maybe I will pick up a charm and try it out. shouldn't be a problem switching back and forth then I am actually hoping that it will work the same way with blackberry connect software as well. Thanks that was the answer I was looking for!
For swapping out handhelds on the BES, the minute you cradle the new handheld at the computer and open desktop manager, it will detect the new handheld and then a pop up appears asking if you want to switch the PIN to the new PIN. You just say yes, and then are prompted to generate an encryption key. Thats it. No server changes need to be made by the BES Admin. You can then restore your backed up data to the handheld.
