My Uncle, who uses this in the US and thinks it's just the best thing ever, is upgrading, and suggests that I could benefit from his 7280. He reckons it would work in Ireland. The email part isn't THAT important, but of course, it would be a nice option. Here in Ireland, it costs extra to have the email option.
Question I ask is, would I be able to just use my Vodaphone sim in this unit (they are always sold "unlocked", apparently.)
Anyone got that bit of specialist knowledge I need?
nd how does this unit differ from the 7230 I had my heart set on?

If it's a 7280 on AT&T originaly, unless he got it unlocked, it's locked. A Vodaphone sim wouldn't work unfortunatly :(.

It doesn't differ really any at all from the 7230, the 7230 is dual-band, 7280 is tri-band. I believe that's the only difference.

Both the 7230 and the 7280 are tri-band, but the 7280 is not a great device outside of North America. It is tri-band, but two of the bands are North America only.

The 7280 uses the 850 and 1900 bands for North America, but is 1800 only for the rest of the world. I am pretty sure the Vodafone is both 900 and 1800, but the 7280 is NOT a great world device.

The 7230 uses 900/1800 and 1900 for North America. A much better world phone.

The point is moot if it is an AT&T BlackBerry, since they won't unlock it, as you said.

It 's not At&T.. it started with a C... something like.. Centralise -- it was a word that looked as if the "C" should have been an "S". That make any sense?
However, the point is - "It's not a great world phone.."

Cingular. It's unlocked. It would work for a vodaphone sim none-the-less.

Nonetheless - Vodafone Ireland appears to have both 900 and 1800 networks, so the 7280 *should* work there.

I never go anywhere else, other than the US..

It should work anywhere that there is a 1800 MHz network.

i was over in ireland for 10 days earlier this year and had a t-mobile 7230 with me. worked everywhere i went which was most places in the country.... all i did was call t-mobile and let them know i was going. when i got there it scanned and picked up vodafone with no problems at all. i did not get charged anything extra for data usage however i did get charged $.99 a minute for voice.
