I understand the electronics side of the difference in current so I know why you are recomending caution.
But I've been using the Moto adapters with my phones for a while now. No problems yet.
USB Ports are 5v 500mA and the devices can charge via that.
The Moto charger on my desk at work is a Moto SPN5202A... 5V 850mA, and I've used it with my 8100, 8320 and 8120, as well as my V3C, V9M and Dare.
The RIM chargers in the box from RIM are 750mA, but the Moto phone's complain that its an "unauthorized charger"..
EDIT: the 8820's microUSB charger is 700mA
/EDIT
The charger from my Moto V3C is 5v 500mA. My car charger is rated the same. .
The only difference... using the 500mA charger or USB port, it charges slower than the with the 750/850mA chargers.
